Dakota Skye

Dakota Skye

Released 2008
Reviewed 2009
Star rating: 3 out of 5

Eileen Boylan (Dakota), Ian Nelson (Jonah), JB Ghuman Jr (Kevin), Dominique Generaux (Beth), Destiny Hyden (Denise), Lori Decker (Sarah).

17 yr old Dakota has a superpower, she can tell the truth every time someone lies. Even little white lies. She is with her boyfriend but knows he doesn’t love her. She knows her friends are worried about her, and doesn’t care. But when Jonah comes along, and seemingly never lies to her, they start to fall in love.

This is a drama that starts off with a whimper as character and plot development are the first order of business. The story is interesting and shows promise at the beginning but by the time the film was done it felt like an excuse for a movie. This really is a teen drama flick with the whole ‘superpower of truth’ thing thrown in to give it an original flavor. The result was a well done, fairly interesting, teen drama that really wasn’t all that original.

Acting by Boylan was quite good. She really sold the depressed teen angle as well as the lovesick kid, and finally as an adult moving into the world. Nelson did a very good job supporting and I would like to see him in a more challenging role. Ghuman, Generaux, Hyden and Decker all did well supporting but nothing to write home about.

Camera work, sets, and sound were well done with some really nice natural backgrounds in several scenes. Dialogue was well done and the movie soundtrack was quite enjoyable.

Overall this was a nicely done, if somewhat vanilla tasting, drama or teen drama. The film did make you think about the lies people tell however, I don’t think it had the impact they had hoped.

Some foul language, sexual scenes, and prevalent drug use but this one should be okay for older teens and above.
