Movie review: Santa Clarita Diet

Sheila and Joel are a couple of happily married real estate agents living in Santa Clarita, California. When Sheila undergoes a strange change, due to her death, their lives start changing in some disturbing ways.

Drew Barrymore (Sheila), Timothy Olyphant (Joel), Liv Hewson (Abby), Skyler Gisondo (Eric), Mary Ellis (Lisa), Richard Jones (Rick), Ricardo Chavira (Dan), Portia de Rossi (Dr. Wolf), Thomas Lennon (Principal Novak).

Santa Clarita Diet begins when Sheila quietly, so quietly we almost miss it, dies. She immediately beings exhibiting strange behavior and before long her life with Joel turns upside down with a strange, unnatural craving for fresh meat. The rest of the series is a hysterical story of zombie evolution in suburbia as we follow Sheila and her transformation.

Acting was good with Barrymore showing she still has the chops to take on an unusual role. Olyphant fit his role well, delivered wonderfully, and seemed to work well with Barrymore. Hewson and Gisondo both felt a bit out of place at first but matured well during the series. Ellis, Jones, Chavira and the rest of the supporting cast were quite enjoyable. Nathan Fillion having a small role early on was awesome!

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are nicely done and fitting for a mainstream series. Action scenes were mild and fun throughout. Dialogue is campy, corny, and nicely done with good humor throughout the series. Sound and soundtrack are basic television tunes, but solid.

Santa Clarita Diet is quite simply a lot of fun. Turn a suburban housewife into a zombie, without letting suburbia know, while dealing with normal things like pot smoking, sexuality, and the loss of body parts and the humor is almost inevitable. The series moves along at a good pace and we are eager for season 2!

With some gore, sexuality, violence, foul language, and drug use this should actually be fine for teens and above.
