Brad jumps into the role of stepdad after marrying Sara, a beautiful divorcee with two children. But when their biological father, Dusty, shows up a hysterical competition begins between the two men.
Will Ferrell (Brad), Mark Wahlberg (Dusty), Linda Cardellini (Sara), Thomas Church (Leo), Scarlett Estevez (Megan), Owen Vaccaro (Dylan), Bobby Cannavale (Dr. Francisco), Hannibal Buress (Griff), Bill Burr (Jerry).
Daddy's Home begins with some character introductions and setup, showing us how hard Brad struggles to be a great dad to his stepkids. When their biological father, Dusty, shows up however things get much more interesting. Dusty begins competing with Brad to win back his family, and Brad responds by fighting back. The rest of the film follows their slapstick rivalry through to the expected Happy Ever After ending.
Acting was fun with Ferrell delivering his usual. Wahlberg was a good antagonist and seemed to work well with the main cast delivering the humor well. Cardellini was enjoyable with solid delivery and emotion. The remainder of the experienced cast with Church, Cannavale, Buress, and Burr fit well and brought the laughs.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were solid suburban with mild backgrounds and good technical work. Minimal CGI was used as needed without taking over the film and fit nicely as did action scenes. Dialogue was silly, campy, and quite a bit of fun. Sound and soundtrack are both well done.
As far as family movies go, this one is pretty good and will likely hold the attention of both younger teens and adults. With some good laughs, the story moves along at a good pace and remains entertaining through the end.
With some mild sexuality, comedy violence, and mild foul language, this should be fine for teens and above. That said, there are some bits of crude humor so maturity matters with this one.
