Captain Marvel takes a step back in time to the 1990's where we follow Carol Danvers ascension to superhero. When a galactic war reaches Earth, trapping humanity between two alien races, Danvers finds herself and a few allies tasked with helping save the planet.
Brie Larson (Carol Danvers), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Ben Mendelsohn (Talos/Keller), Jude Law (Yon-Rogg), Annette Bening (Supreme Intelligence/Lawson), Djimon Hounsou (Korath), Clark Gregg (Coulson).
In the end, Captain Marvel feels out of place in the MCU. The story starts well but does a poor job of explaining the multiverse and how Danvers finds herself on Earth confronting a different version of herself. Once there however, the story does okay as the Kree vs. Skrulls battle intensifies. At the same time, we feel forced into liking Danvers by the film which tends to mute any meaningful MCU plot points.
Acting was decent with Larson delivering fairly well yet, feeling out of place with Jackson and Gregg at the same time. Jackson, whether acting or direction, was not the same Fury in this film that we have seen before. Nor was Gregg. Add in a Supreme Intelligence, delivered well by Bening, and it is hard to believe these are the same characters we meet 10 years later.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are good but this one feels a lot darker than other MCU films. Action scenes are heavily integrated with CGI and are, for the most part, well done. There were a few scenes, usually focused on Danvers's powers, that felt excessive or cartoonish. Dialogue was mediocre. Sound and soundtrack are good.
As far as MCU films go, this one is probably in the lower third. The film feels a bit darker, less energetic than others. It also feels like we are being force-fed a Carol Danvers who isn't even sure who she wants to be along with familiar characters stripped of their familiarity, leading to a lack of audience engagement.
With some mild sexuality, blood, gore, violence, mild foul language, and potentially frightening scenes, this should be fine for teens and above.
