In the not-too-distant future a man is trapped aboard the Satellite of Love, orbiting the moon, where mad scientists force him to watch the worst movies ever made with his robot friends.
Joel Hodgson (Joel), Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo), Trace Beaulieu (Crow), Jim Mallon (Gypsy), Michael Nelson (Mike), Frank Conniff (TV's frank), Mary Jo Pehl (Pearl), Bill Corbett (Crow), Patrick Brantseg (Gypsy).
Joel is stranded on the Satellite of Love by mad scientists who force him to watch the worst movies ever made with robots he has made to keep him company. Joel and his crew have no choice of movies, nor do they control when the movies begin or end.
While it may sound like Joel and friends are the focus, the bad movies are a big part of this one with quality titles like Eegah!, Jack Frost, and Laserblast. Presented in a theatre setting, we get to watch not only the top-notch films but also enjoy the comedy of Joel and his friends as they critique and parody the films.
Acting is amusing but only because it is so rough and campy. At the same time, Joel and the robots and silly and fun.
Camera work is simple but good with few action scenes. Sets are campy and also simple but fit the series nicely. Dialogue was corny, silly, and provided most of the entertainment in this series. Sound and soundtrack are okay.
If you are looking for something a bit mindless, or enjoy bad B-movies, MST3K is for you! Likewise if you enjoy vocal movie critics or campy parody. Those who actually want to watch these films may find the MST3K approach a bit annoying.
Some of the films presented may have questionable material, but Mystery Science Theatre 3000 blurs nudity and does a good job of keeping the series viewable by teens and above.
