When two tech-savvy teens decide to try and convince a cranky neighbor that his house is haunted they get more than they bargained for as events take a dark turn.
James Caan (Harold), Logan Miller (Ethan), Keir Gilchrist (Sean), Laura Innes (Caroline), Edwin Hodge (Officer Palmer), Anne Dudek (Elise), Bailey Noble (Carly), Lili Reinhart (Ashley), Mindy Sterling (Mae).
The Good Neighbor begins by launching straight into the twisted plot Ethan and Sean contrive in hopes of convincing their neighbor his house is haunted. After invading his home to install video cameras and other monitoring devices, the two teens begin to witness some disturbing behavior from their neighbor. The suspense and thrill escalate, along with flashbacks that explain some of the behavior the teens are seeing. In the end, they are sucked into Harold's world in a way they never imagined and the film finishes with a nice twist or two.
Acting was good with Caan showing he still has the chops for serious roles. Miller did fairly well with his bad-boy character, while Gilchrist played against him well and delivered nicely as the more sane of the two. Hodge, Dudek, Innes, and the remainder of the supporting cast did well.
Camera work was a bit rough with the handheld camera theme that has become annoying in recent years. Sets and backgrounds were simple but well done and fitting. Action scenes were mild but solid. Dialogue was enjoyable, if somewhat thin at times. Sound and soundtrack are solid.
Those who enjoy a solid crime thriller should enjoy this one. The plot rolls out at a nice pace and develops good depth, including a couple of finishing twists. Acting a technical work is solid, leaving us with a mild but enjoyable film.
With one scene of violence and blood, this should be fine for older teens and above.
