When disease infects New York via cockroaches, etymologist Susan fights back with a new strain of super killer cockroach designed to die off after the first generation. But when nature finds a way to perpetuate the new species, which is highly aggressive, Susan and the rest of New York may wish they had never been developed in the first place.
Mira Sorvino (Susan), Jeremy Northam (Peter), Alexander Goodwin (Chuy), Giancarlo Giannini (Manny), Charles Dutton (Leonard), Josh Brolin (Josh), Alix Koromzay (Remy).
This one kicks off pretty quickly, flying right through the need for, and development of, the new killer bugs. What follows is some minimal character development with the remainder being your basic monster flick whereby the mad scientist (Susan) and her hubby (Peter) try to undo the nasty genetic oops they have made and save humanity. Toss in a cute handicapped kid, Chuy, and an arrogant disbelieving cop, Leonard, and the plot has some meat. Just don’t look at the meat closely or you will find more than a few holes.
Acting was decent from Sorvino, Northam, Goodwin, and Giannini while Dutton was a bit over the top and Brolin was completely forgettable.
Special effects were pretty well done with decent close-up work and plenty of goo while some of the CGI was a bit overdone. Camera work was okay but there were a lot of dark shots making the killer bugs difficult to see. Sets and background were very nicely done.
Overall a decent monster flick with a good mix of plot, monsters, gore and drama. Deserving of a spot in the top half of your Must See list.
Violence, some gore, some foul language, and scary monsters so save this for older teens and above.
