Solo: A Star Wars Story and prequel finds a young Han Solo looking for entry into the criminal underworld as a means to survive and fulfill his dream of piloting a spacecraft. There he meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca, and current owner of his future ship, Lando Calrissian.
Alden Ehrenreich (Han), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Woody Harrelson (Beckett), Emilia Clarke (Qi'ra), Donald Glover (Lando), Thandie Newton (Val), Paul Bettany (Dryden), Erin Kellyman (Enfys Nest).
Solo: A Star Wars Story travels back in time to learn how Han Solo became the man he is later in the Star Wars storyline. A rebel from the beginning, Han meets Chewy years before joining the rebellion and we learn quite a bit about Chewy in the process. Han also encounters Lando where he first learns of the Millennium Falcon and again, we learn quite a bit about Lando and how Han acquired his ship. The journey involves some good action and a bit of comedy while doing a decent job of adhering to the existing storyline.
Acting was solid with Ehrenreich playing Han better than expected. Suotamo was good. Harrelson was enjoyable and added interesting depth. Clarke, Glover, and the remainder of the supporting cast were entertaining throughout.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are nicely done and well blended with CGI. Action scenes are fitting and executed well. Dialogue is good with nice depth and movement. Sound and soundtrack are good. Probably most important, the technical work in this film from most every aspect felt consistent with previous franchise films.
Overall Solo: A Star Wars Story is a good addition to the franchise and does a nice job of adding depth to the Star Wars franchise. As expected, the film was met with criticism, but other than purists most should enjoy this one.
With some violence, this should be fine for teens and above.
