Years after the death of their young daughter, a doll maker and his wife welcome a nun and several young girls into their home when a nearby orphanage shuts down. But Annabelle, a possessed creation of the doll-maker, isn't about to share her home with others.
Anthony LaPaglia (Samuel), Samara Lee (Bee), Miranda Otto (Esther), LuLu Wilson (Linda), Talitha Bateman (Janice), Stephanie Sigman (Sister Charlotte), Mark Bramhall (Father Massey), Grace Fulton (Carol), Philippa Coulthard (Nancy), Tayler Buck (Kate).
Annabelle: Creation, a prequel to the first Annabelle film, is truly a creation film showing us how Annabelle came to exist. The film begins with a bit of shock horror before settling into character development for a bit. When Samuel and his wife welcome Sister Charlotte and a group of girls from a shutdown orphanage, the film finds more depth and gets much more interesting. About this time the horror shows up and begins to build with the film finding a decent pace. The story ends with a nod to the previous film while raising questions of plot continuity.
Acting was a mix with Lee, Wilson, Bateman, and Sigman all doing quite well. LaPaglia delivered well at times but missed the mark at others. Fulton, Coulthard, Buck and the remainder of the supporting cast were solid and enjoyable.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are nicely done. Good use of lighting, fading backgrounds, and other techniques added to the tension nicely. Effects were fitting and well done. Dialogue was interesting though a bit more depth would have been nice. Sound and soundtrack are okay.
Overall Annabelle: Creation is a bit light on the horror aspect and may disappoint those hoping for intense scares or gore. However, those with a strong interest in the Annabelle story or franchise may enjoy this one.
With violence, gore, foul language, and potentially disturbing scenes, save this one for the oldest teens and above.
