When a science experiment goes wrong, primatologist Davis watches the gorilla he has raised from an infant turn into a monster. Teaming up with geneticist Kate to find an antidote, they quickly learn two other dangerous animals have been changed as well.
Dwayne Johnson (Davis), Naomie Harris (Kate), Malin Akerman (Claire), Jeffrey Morgan (Russell), Jake Lacy (Brett), Joe Manganiello (Burke), Marley Shelton (Kerry), P.J. Byrne (Nelson), Demetrius Grosse (Blake).
Rampage launches nicely with some good backstory for Davis and George the gorilla. Add in the Wyden siblings and their twisted vision of genetic manipulation, a trip to space, and this video game inspired flick is off and running. Plot depth grows at a nice rate alongside the action until the film finds a good pace. Aimed at younger viewers, Rampage finishes with the requisite Happy Ever After ending that brings a few laughs after bringing a few tears.
Acting was solid with Johnson delivering his usual. Harris was good and seemed to work well with Johnson. Akerman fit her role well and executed nicely. Morgan was a surprise and channeling his character from another series worked nicely. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid and enjoyable.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were heavily integrated with CGI and nicely done with good detail and fit. Action scenes were intense and immense but their over-the-top presentation fit nicely. Dialogue was good with some solid depth and nice bits of humor. Sound and soundtrack were both enjoyable.
Rampage may be aimed at younger viewers but this one should be enjoyable for the whole family. Plot depth and some humor will help keep adults engaged while younger viewers will connect with the child-like actions of George.
With plenty of creature violence and gore, some foul language, and disturbing images, Rampage should actually be fine for teens and above.
