An international research team lies stranded at the bottom of the ocean in a deep-sea submersible. Put there by a long-thought extinct pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as a Megalodon, they call in the one man who has ever faced the beast, Taylor, to aid in their rescue.
Jason Statham (Jonas Taylor), Bingbing Li (Suyin), Rainn Wilson (Morris), Cliff Curtis (Mac), Winston Chao (Zhang), Shuya Cai (Meiying), Ruby Rose (Jaxx), Page Kennedy (DJ), Robert Taylor (Heller).
The Meg, short for Megalodon, is a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark happily trapped beneath a thermocline in a pristine ocean environment until scientists in a deep-sea submersible punch through at which point it becomes dinner-time and the rest of the film is fairly predictable. Fortunately what wasn't predictable was the added bits of humor which honestly kept this one watchable. The film finishes, of course, with a Happily Ever After ending and surprising lack of sequel setup.
Jason, really, what were you thinking? You can do action-comedy sir, but this ain't it. A bit more action like we are used to from Statham and this could have been a much better flick. Li was solid and enjoyable and worked well with Statham. Wilson was enjoyable in his role and delivered nicely. Rose was notable and seemed to do well along with adding a vision distraction. The remainder of the cast was solid.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were moderately blended with CGI and graphics which were moderately executed. Some scenes were quite good while others almost laughable technically. Action was okay and again, could have been more. Dialogue survived with the comedy but fell a bit flat otherwise. Sound and soundtrack are okay.
Overall The Meg is a decent flick but with a slight undertone of old fish smell. Those who enjoy milder action-comedy should enjoy this one the most.
With some violence, foul language, and potentially disturbing images, this should be fine for preens and above.
