Magic Mike is a male stripper at the top of his game. Introducing a new dancer known as the Kid to the profession, they both learn lessons about the pleasures and perils of their chosen career.
Matthew McConaughey (Dallas), Channing Tatum (Magic Mike), Olivia Munn (Joanna), Alex Pettyfer (Adam), James Kelly (Sal), Cody Horn (Brooke), Reid Carolin (Paul), George Sack (George), Micaela Johnson (Portia).
Magic Mike begins with some of Mike's story followed by character introductions and what passes for the main plot. Essentially Mike wants more out of life and stripping is just the means to an end. But when his girlfriend's brother, Adam, follows him to work one night Mike ends up becoming a trainer. And when Adam's success goes to his head it threatens Mike's relationship with his girlfriend Brooke, Adam's sister.
Acting was decent with McConaughey, Tatum, Pettyfer, and others doing a nice job of grinding on stage with very little clothing. McConaughey was perfectly cast and his arrogance really drove his role. Tatum did surprisingly well and seemed to work nicely with Pettyfer, who also did well. Munn, Horn, and the remainder of the cast were solid.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were mild but nicely done. Action scenes, mainly dancing, was enjoyable and of higher quality than expected. Dialogue was a bit thin at times, left some plot holes, and could have used a little work. Sound and soundtrack were fun.
While Magic Mike sounds great, there really isn't much plot to be found in this one. The plot ends up feeling like a thin excuse to show off some male bodies, which it did pretty well. Those hoping for depth may be slightly disappointed.
With plenty of nudity and fairly graphic sexuality, some violence, a lot of foul language, and some drug use, save this one for older teens and above.
