Based on the V.C. Andrews novel, after an accident leaves 4 children fatherless they return to their Grandparents mansion with their mother in hopes of an inheritance from their dying Grandfather. What they find instead is a sordid family history and sadistic Grandmother who wastes no time imprisoning them. As they struggle to survive the nightmare only seems to get worse.
Movie review: Flowers in the Attic – 1987
Louise Fletcher (Grandma), Victoria Tennant (Corrine), Kristy Swanson (Cathy), Jeb Stuart Adams (Chris), Ben Ganger (Cory), Lindsay Parker (Carrie), Nathan Davis (Grandpa).
I read the books when I was much younger and didn’t remember much about the plot but did remember I enjoyed the books. I think that is what allowed me to enjoy the movie, I didn’t have any plot bias. The film starts off a bit slow but steadily builds momentum to the final revelations toward the end. The ending was a bit of a letdown and a non-event. It is difficult to translate the fear of captivity onto film but this movie did a decent job.
Acting was good but a bit dry. There just didn’t seem to be the emotion that was expected nor energy between many of the characters. Fletcher made a great evil Grandma while Swanson and Adams seemed to have pretty good energy. Tennant wasn’t bad but different casting could have helped a lot.
Overall a very nice drama with good suspense and fairly solid plot. From other reviews, you may want to avoid this one if you loved the book as it doesn’t sound like it was very complimentary. Otherwise it is well worth watching.
Some violence but this one should be fine for preens and above.
