Sam is a young boy with strange dreams and apparent mental issues possibly resulting from stress around the troubled relationship of his father, David, and his mother. As David is bringing Sam home from a mental hospital the two have an accident and find themselves on a farm with the strange Ben. While David adjusts by working for Ben, Sam is realizing that things aren’t getting better but in fact are getting worse.
Lance Henriksen (Ben), Brian Wimmer (David), Adam Gordon (Sam), Claudia Christian (Dr. Cairns), Sean Young (Grace).
This one starts off interestingly enough but never seems to build any momentum beyond the plodding of character and plot development. It felt like the director was told to make an After School Special when he really wanted to make a zombie flick while the script writer wanted to make a film of religious significance. The result was a movie that didn’t really seem to know where it was going or what it wanted to be. The final plot was an interesting concept, that the Devil wants to re-write the apocalypse by again tempting mankind, though it had more than a few holes.
Acting was pretty good by Henriksen and Gordon and mediocre by the rest of the cast. Special effects were also a mix between fairly well done and elementary. Sets, camera work, dialogue and sound were all fairly well done though the film appears to have had a smaller budget.
Overall, a decent if largely unexciting film spotlighting the fight between good and evil at a leisurely pace. If you like a moral message delivered with your tidbits of horror and suspense, this is the one for you. Otherwise, find a real horror flick or a nice After School Special.
No nudity, sexuality, or foul language I could remember but some violence and gore shots so save this for teens and above.
