Picking up where the "Firefly" series left off, Captain Reynolds and his crew work to evade an assassin determined to capture River and return her to the people who experimented on her with hopes of using her telepathic abilities.
Nathan Fillion (Mal), Gina Torres (Zoe), Alan Tudyk (Wash), Morena Baccarin (Inara), Adam Baldwin (Jayne), Jewel Staite (Kaylee), Sean Maher (Simon), Summer Glau (River), Ron Glass (Shepherd Book), Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Operative).
Serenity picks up where the Firefly series left off with Captain Reynolds and amazingly, his original cast crew. Essentially a child gets sucked into some freaky mental experiment, turns on her experimenters later, social upheaval is imminent. With an assassin hot on their trail, the Firefly and her crew desperately try and avoid capture while evading marauders. Add in a nice dose of comedy and we end up with a well rounded film that has a serious plot which it does not take seriously, wrapping up nicely in the end.
Nathan Fillion (Captain Reynolds) made the movie for me. He delivers with really good off-center comedy and I loved it. Tudyk also brought the comedy nicely. Torres, Baccarin, Staite, Glau, and the remainder of the cast were very good, just as they were in the series.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are all nicely done. I enjoyed the dead planet scenes and the 'Reevers' quite a lot. Action scenes were solid, energetic, and fit the film well. Dialogue was good with nice bits of humor. Sound and soundtrack are good.
Serenity had a nice post-apocalyptic taste that I always enjoy in a movie. I've seen this one a couple of times and the special effects are pretty good, the action was enough to keep things moving but not to much, and the acting all around was quite enjoyable. If you haven't seen this yet throw it in toward the top of your Must See list.
With some mild sexuality, violence and gore, along with some mild foul language and disturbing images, this should be fine for teens and above.
