When four thieves are killed during a botched heist, their four widows find themselves on the hook for unpaid debts. Banding together, the four widows decide to take fate into their own hands for once.
Viola Davis (Veronica), Liam Neeson (Harry), Jon Bernthal (Florek), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Carlos), Coburn Goss (Jimmy), Michelle Rodriguez (Linda), Elizabeth Debicki (Alice), Carrie Coon (Amanda), Robert Duvall (Tom), Colin Farrell (Jack).
Widows begins with a glimpse at events which resulted in death for the four thieves and more briefly, their marriages. This is also where Veronica learns she, and quite probably the other widows, are being held responsible for their husband's large debts. With setup completed Veronica steps up to take control, bringing the four widows together with the intent of finishing a big heist her husband had planned but never executed. From here the rest of the film follows along as the widows learn to be thieves and how to deal with other criminals.
Acting was decent with Davis delivering a solid performance despite not knowing how to look interested, or smile. Neeson and Bernthal were both good in smallish roles. Rodriguez delivered as usual and seemed to work well with others. Debicki delivered nicely with good emotion. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid and enjoyable throughout.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good with a time appropriate look and solid feel. Action scenes were brief but intense and added good depth to the storyline. Dialogue was good and moved things along at a decent pace. Sound and soundtrack were enjoyable.
Overall Widows is a decent crime drama with only one problem; it is over 2 hours long. It feels like a little bit of editing could have easily shaved 30 minutes off the film without losing content, which left us feeling like this one dragged on rather than evolved. Those who enjoy drawn out drama should enjoy this one.
With some sexuality and nudity, violence, gore, and foul language, save this one for older teens and above.
