Grieving the loss of his wife and daughter, Joe meets a mother who can contact spirits while being suffocated. He decides to help her contact her dying daughter but quickly realizes the spirit in the girl is now that of his dead wife.
Nicolas Cage (Joe), Franka Potente (Julie), Penelope Mitchell (Billie), Garrett Clayton (Mike), Hopper Penn (Rick), Lydia Hearst (Mary), Nailim Sanchez (Jasmine), Paris Bravo (Young Julie), Nora Anderson (Young Mary).
Between Worlds jumps right to it with Joe stumbling upon Julie being strangled in the stall of a convenience store bathroom. Julie tells Joe of her ability to contact spirits while being suffocated and of course, Joe is interested in hopes of contacting his dead wife and daughter. The rest of the film is a strange journey as Joe now realizes his dead wife is inhabiting Billie, something that doesn't seem to be a big deal in the film.
Acting was mediocre at best here. Cage felt like a mess which, while it may have been his character, didn't feel like it was his character. Potente seemed to want to come across as the hot soccer mom and missed the mark despite reasonably well done delivery otherwise. Mitchell was interesting at times but like others, felt lacking in energy and sincerity.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are mild, somewhat boring, but okay. Action scenes are decent and fitting. Dialogue is decent for the most part. Sound and soundtrack are okay.
Overall this one is a miss. Acting was disappointing to say the least with Cage being the lead offender. The plot lacks energy, depth, and wanders mindlessly into intimacy and pointless drama. We hoped the thriller aspect would show up eventually but it did not. Unless you can think of a strongly compelling reason to watch this one, just don't.
With some mild violence, pervasive alcohol and drug use, and strong sexual content including nudity, save this one for adults and above.
