The 4 are back again, this time their lives being disrupted by the arrival of the mysterious Silver Surfer along with meddling by Doom. As Fantastic and the Invisible Woman are about to marry, the arrival of the Surfer throws them into chaos once again. With Doom sticking his nose into things it just gets more difficult but it isn’t long before the 4 understand the Surfer has come to prepare Earth for destruction and it is up to them to save the world.
Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic), Jessica Alba (Invisible Woman), Chris Evans (Torch), Michael Chiklis (Thing), Julian McMahon (Doom), Laurence Fishburne (Surfer voice).
Yes, this movie is silly, campy, unrealistic, cheesy, over the top, and a few other things. Maybe I’m in the minority but, I still enjoyed it. (Maybe it was just Alba in spandex?). The story moves along well and some bits of humor keep things on the lighter side. Add in a touch of drama and the storyline rounds out fairly well.
Acting was definitely on the campy silly side but appropriate for what I think they were trying to do in this film. Really, this is rated PG so it is a kids film. Evans did well in this one and worked well with others. Alba was okay with strong support from spandex as an added bonus.
Despite the CGI and effects being over the top I thought they were well done throughout the film. Effects aren’t so important as bright colors, action, and imagination with a kids film and this movie has plenty of those things. Dialogue was good with some nice laughs as mentioned. Sound and soundtrack are solid.
I was a reader of the comic books when I was a kid so I will say from that perspective this whole franchise is a bit disappointing. But, if you can forget the comic for a moment this is a decent kids action flick without nudity, gore, and all the other junk to which we all seem so addicted these days. There are some plot holes and disappointments but again, this was made for the kids.
For a family movie with younger viewers you could do a LOT worse. Younger kids in particular will probably enjoy this one.
Some violence, very mild language and brief sexual reference but overall kids should be fine watching this one.
