When the world comes under attack by terrifying creatures hunting humans, 16-yr-old Ally and her family search for a safe place to hide. Not an easy thing to do when the creatures hunt by sound and Ally is deaf.
Stanley Tucci (Hugh), Kiernan Shipka (Ally), Miranda Otto (Kelly), Kate Trotter (Lynn), John Corbett (Glenn), Kyle Breitkopf (Jude), Dempsey Bryk (Rob), Billy MacLellan (The Reverend).
The Silence jumps into the storyline fairly quickly after a brief bit of history about Ally. The world now terrorized and Ally's family on the run, the story begins to gain some depth as we continue to learn more about the characters. Add in a strange cult near the end and things become even more desperate. But, the film finishes with a Happy Ever After ending which leaves an obvious opening for a sequel.
Acting was good with Tucci showing he can still deliver. Shipka gave an enjoyable performance all around, as did Breitkopf. Otto and Trotter were solid and contributed well. The remainder of the supporting cast was fairly solid.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are good with a natural feel and nice use of scenery. Action scenes were pretty intense but fit the film perfectly. Dialogue is interesting, and a challenge at times being so quiet, but solid and builds decent depth. Sound and soundtrack are good.
While The Silence may not be the most original storyline, the film moves at a decent pace and enjoys good technical work. A couple of twists add some depth and keep things interesting. Those who enjoy a nice horror flick or thriller should enjoy this one.
With some fairly graphic gore, violence, and disturbing images, this should actually be fine for teens and above.
