Dr. Daniel Jackson, a hieroglyphics expert, is drafted to help the Air Force explain an unusual object found in the Egyptian desert. What they discover is a teleportation device leading to another world in which humans resembling ancient Egyptians worship the god Ra.
Kurt Russell (Col. Jack O'Neil), James Spader (Dr. Daniel Jackson), Jaye Davidson (Ra), Viveca Lindfors (Catherine), Alexis Cruz (Skaara), Djimon Hounsou (Horus), John Diehl (Lt. Kawalsky), Erick Avari (Kasuf)
When the Air Force finds an unusual object with strange writings in the Egyptian desert they draft hieroglyphics expert Dr. Jackson to help them decipher the meaning. Uncovering a portal to another universe, a team is sent through the portal to a world inhabited by humans resembling ancient Egyptians and worshipping the god Ra. There, they also discover the true purpose of the Stargate.
Acting was solid with Russell delivering a slightly over-the-top performance as the tough military leader. Then came Spader who balanced against Russell well with is intellectual hippie performance that fit surprisingly well. Davidson was an enjoyable Ra as Hounsou was a Horus. Avari, Diehl, and the remainder of the supporting cast delivered nicely.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are very good with some wonderfully imaginative sets and very well done costuming. Effects and CGI are also good without taking over the film. Dialogue is solid and moves things along fairly well. Sound and soundtrack are fitting and enjoyable.
If you are a sci-fi fan and haven't seen Stargate yet, put it at the top of your Must See List. This is one I enjoy enough to watch every once in a while. If you enjoy sci-fi, you should enjoy this one. If instead you want to compare a late 90's film to 21st century CGI and current blockbusters then yes, you will probably be disappointed.
With a fair amount of violence, very mild sexuality and profanity, this should be fine for teens and above.
