In the 21st century vampires have evolved, preparing for war with a plan to control humans at any cost and New York is Ground Zero. The result; The Strain.
Corey Stoll (Ephraim), David Bradley (Abraham), Kevin Durand (Fet), Jonathan Hyde (Eldritch/Master), Richard Sammel (Eichorst), Miguel Gomez (Gus), Ruta Gedmintas (Dutch), Max Charles (Zach), Natalie Brown (Kelly), Robin Downes (The Master).
The Strain, an FX series based on a book, is four seasons of vampire schemes and desperate attempts to stop them by humans. The series begins well with the initial outbreak of a strange virus in New York. From there the series follows Dr. Ephraim with the CDC Canary Team as they investigate. The virus quickly grows and with the addition of some new characters, learns The Strain is much more than a simple virus. A rebel group is quickly formed with the remainder of the film focused on the fight between vampire leaders and the rebels.
Acting was good with Stoll, Bradley, Hyde, Gomez, Gedmintas and others doing well. Durand was a lot of fun delivering more laughs than others. Sammel was brilliant in his role with wonderful delivery and fit. Charles was simply an annoying teen at first but matured somewhat toward the end of the series.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are solid throughout. CGI and action scenes, including vampire costuming and makeup, are quite good and enjoyable. Dialogue had nice depth with some humor accompanying the tension and drama. Sound and soundtrack are good.
If you enjoy vampire stories, check this one out. The Strain enjoys a good storyline along with nicely done acting and solid technical work. Fans of the book, or vampire stories, should enjoy this one.
With some sexuality and nudity, violence, gore, some more gore, foul language, disturbing images, and some bonus gore, this should be fine for older teens and above.
