Max and Annie host a weekly Game Night with friends but this week Max's brother, Brooks, has arranged a murder mystery party. When Max is kidnapped, the gamers begin to investigate but find this is not a game and Max is not what he seems to be. Winning means survival, lose and it is game over for good.
Jason Bateman (Max), Rachel McAdams (Annie), Kyle Chandler (Brooks), Sharon Horgan (Sarah), Billy Magnussen (Ryan), Lamorne Morris (Kevin), Kylie Bunbury (Michelle), Jesse Plemons (Gary), Michael Hall (Bulgarian).
Meeting weekly for a game night, this week 6 friends are in for a surprise when drop-in Brooks arranges for a murder mystery party, once again overshadowing his brother Max. When Brooks is kidnapped the gamers begin to investigate but quickly learn this is not a game and Brooks is not who he seems to be. Stepping up to the challenge the gamers try to save Brooks but this could be game over for all of them. The addition of some personal drama and comedy keep things somewhat interesting.
Acting was decent with Bateman and McAdams both doing well and appearing to work well together. Chandler was enjoyable. Magnussen was dorky fun and played well against Horgan who delivered nicely. Plemons delivered well in a darker role, while Hall, Morris and the remainder of the supporting cast were also good.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are fairly mild but feel solid and realistic. Action scenes were mild but good. Dialogue included some comedy, sarcasm, and drama, fitting the film well. Sound and soundtrack are okay.
Overall Game Night is a mild crime thriller with a nice injection of comedy that helps keep things entertaining and the plot moving. While adults may enjoy this one, the lack of depth and racy humor will likely make this one more popular with teens.
With some sexuality, a fair amount of violence and gore, foul language, and potentially disturbing images, this should be fine for older teens and above.
