Movie review: The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

When heartless border patrol office Mike accidentally kills Mel, he buries the body in an unmarked grave. But when Pete learns of his friend's death, he kidnaps Mike and drags him along to fulfill his promise to Mel that he would be buried in his hometown.

Tommy Lee Jones (Pete), Barry Pepper (Mike), Julio Cedillo (Melquiades), Dwight Yoakum (Belmont), January Jones (Lou Ann Norton), Melissa Leo (Rachel), Mel Rodriguez (Capt. Gomez), Cecillia Suarez (Rosa).

Directed by Tommy Lee Jones, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is a story of friendship, crime, and honor and delivers well on each. The story is both interesting and unusual with a mix of humor, drama, and What The Heck Just Happened scenes. The film moves along at a decent pace, generating audience engagement through the end.

Acting was good with Jones and Pepper both in roles that suited them well. Both delivered nicely and seemed to work well together. Yoakum was an interesting addition but he might want to stick with singing. Jones, Leo, and the remainder of the cast were solid.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are good with nice use of natural scenery. Action scenes were fitting and well executed. Dialogue was decent with some nice bits of humor. Sound and soundtrack are okay.

While The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada may not belong at the top of your Must See list, the film is very good and worth the watch. Those who enjoy a solid western crime drama should enjoy this one.

With some sexuality, nudity, violence, gore, and foul language, save this one for older teens and above.
