When the Graham family matriarch passes away, the survivors deal with more than the grieving process when her presence lingers and the dark legacy she has passed down to them is realized.
Alex Wolff (Peter), Gabriel Byrne (Steve), Toni Collette (Annie), Milly Shapiro (Charlie), Mallory Bechtel (Bridget), Ann Dowd (Joan).
Hereditary launches with the introduction of the Graham family before quickly giving us a tease of supernatural horror. After a fair amount of drama, we are given another horror tease. The rest of the film is a rinse-and-repeat process that never really brings the quality of horror implied with the teasing. Instead it ends up feeling like a very light horror with much of the two-hour-plus runtime focused on excessive drama. The film finally realizes nothing is coming together and crams a lot of activity in the last 30 minutes to finish things.
Acting, or direction maybe, was a bit messy. Shapiro was appropriately creepy and delivered well. Wolff was decent with reasonably good delivery. Byrne felt underused and lacking energy most of the time. Collette put a lot of energy into her grieving scenes which were frequent enough to become absolutely annoying by the end of the film.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were decent with a solid appropriate feel. Action scenes and CGI were reasonably good. That said, the last 30 minutes of the film were an absolute editing mess which raised more questions than it answered. Dialogue was disappointing and ignored common sense much of the time. Sound and soundtrack are okay other than the vibrating bass attempt at creating tension.
In the end Hereditary was a miss for us. The film never developed strong energy, the storyline was not well explored or explained, and neither of us enjoyed seeing Collette meltdown every 15 minutes. At the same time, rather than relying on CGI or effects, Hereditary is more of an old-fashioned horror flick that will likely appeal to those who enjoy strong drama with their horror.
With a fair amount of horror nudity, graphic violence, and foul language, this should be fine for older teens and above.
