After spending several years at sea, Alice returns home in this sequel to the 2010 blockbuster "Alice in Wonderland'. Finding her way once again to Wonderland, Alice learns the Mad Hatter really has gone mad and sets out to save her friend.
Johnny Depp (Hatter), Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Helena Carter (Iracebeth), Anne Hathaway (Mirana), Sacha Cohen (Time), Rhys Ifans (Zanik), Matt Lucas (Tweedle's), Lindsay Duncan (Helen), Leo Bill (Hamish).
Alice Through the Looking Glass starts by catching up with Alice on her ship as she returns from years at sea. Once home, she quickly finds her way back to Wonderland where she learns her best friend Mad Hatter is literally mad. The solution Alice finds is Time. But will he be willing to help?
Where the original film and story focused on Alice and Mad Hatter, this sequel focuses more on Mirana and Iracebeth ending up looking a lot like an origin story. The background and history was enjoyable and added nice depth with the film finishing on the expected Happy Ever After note.
Acting was decent though Depp was a bit disappointing with a seeming lack of energy and likewise lack of humor we expect from the Mad Hatter. Wasikowska was solid and worked well with Depp. Carter rocked it once again with solid delivery and perfect fit. Hathaway delivered well as usual, as did Cohen who presented great energy and humor. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid.
Camera work is good, but backgrounds, sets, costuming, and CGI dominate in this franchise. Costuming was wonderful and fit the nicely done sets well. Action was mild but enjoyable. Dialogue was fun but seemed to have less humor and depth this time around. Sound is good.
While Alice Through the Looking Glass may not have much of a relationship to the original story, this extension is a decent continuation of the franchise. Those who enjoyed the original film should enjoy this one.
