Gloria is having a rough time. Out of work and interested only in partying, when her boyfriend kicks her out of their apartment Gloria is forced to move back home where she is reunited with a childhood friend. When news breaks of a giant creature destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria realizes she is somehow connected to the events.
Anne Hathaway (Gloria), Jason Sudeikis (Oscar), Austin Stowell (Joel), Tim Nelson (Garth), Dan Stevens (Tim), Hannah Cheramy (Young Gloria), Nathan Ellison (Young Oscar), Sarah Surh (Mother).
Colossal begins well enough with a bit of backstory before falling apart. Billed as a comedy, the first thing we notice is the film has none. A bit of plot setup in place, the film next tries to expose the main plot and fails miserably. Throughout the film there are numerous points never explained leaving us with a mess of a plot. Add in some stalker drama and things get even more confusing. Toward the end the film tries to bring things together but fails to be coherent.
Surprisingly acting seemed pretty good in this one. It felt more like direction and writing were the problem. Hathaway delivered reasonably well as usual. Sudeikis was definitely entertaining with solid energy. Stowell fit his role well as did Nelson. The remainder of the supporting cast was okay.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were decent enough. CGI and action was mixed with some well done scenes, and some not so well done. Creature effects were fitting. Dialogue left a lot to the imagination here, and even created confusion at times. Sound and soundtrack are okay.
In the end, unless you have a strong compelling reason to watch Colossal, don't bother. The storyline is a mess with this one, bringing little of value to the table.
With some intense violence, foul language, addiction issues, and adult situations, save this one for the oldest teens and above.
