Welcome to a world where superheroes abound, owned by the Vought corporation, and led by a group known as the Seven. But in this world many of the Supes, as they are known, are as corrupt as the criminals they claim to catch. Enter The Boys; a vigilante group looking to punish and control the corrupt Supes.
Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hughie), Antony Starr (Homelander), Erin Moriarty (Annie), Dominique McElligott (Maeve), Jessie Usher (A-Train), Laz Alonso (Mother's Milk), Chance Crawford (The Deep), Tomer Capon (Frenchie), Karen Fukuhara (The Female), Elisabeth Shue (Madelyn).
The Boys launches nicely and almost looks like another cookie-cutter superhero franchise until we realize, those superheroes might actually be superthugs! That is when Billy and his crew, affectionately known as The Boys, show up to punish and control the Supes as they are known. The rest of the film is your typical good vs. evil type theme but with the roles somewhat reversed. Add in a bit of comedy and it makes for an interesting series with a bit more grit than the superhero flicks being churned out by big names recently.
Acting is solid with Urban delivering very well in a role that seems to suit him. Starr also fits his role well with sinister delivery and expression. McElligott worked her role well, as did Usher, Alonso, and Crawford. Capon was an enjoyable addition as was Fukuhara and Shue delivered as always. Most everyone was enjoyable here.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are decent with a fairly solid feel. CGI and action scenes are also reasonably well done. Remember, this is a series not a blockbuster. Dialogue is fun with some bits of humor that keep things interesting. Sound and soundtrack are good.
Overall The Boys is a gritty superhero series that separates itself from the plethora of comic book franchises launching lately by reversing roles and suggesting not all superheroes are good people. Sci-fi and dark humor fans should enjoy this one.
With some nudity, sexuality, quite graphic violence and gore, foul language, and disturbing images, this one is definitely not for the little ones. The Boys should be fine for older teens and above.
