The first human born on Mars, a teen who has had little contact with Earth, finally travels to Earth for the first time, teaming up with a street-smart girl while on a journey to discover his origins.
Gary Oldman (Shepherd), Asa Butterfield (Gardner), Janet Montgomery (Sarah), Carla Gugino (Kendra), Britt Robertson (Tulsa), Trey Tucker (Harrison), Scott Takeda (Dr. Loh), Adande Thorne (Hubbard), BD Wong (Chen).
Gardner is the first human born on Mars and has never set foot on Earth before when he finally gets a chance as a teen. Once on Earth he realizes his past is a mystery and the origin story theme of the film is off and running. Teaming up with street-smart girl Tulsa, the two are off on an adventure, and possibly a romance. The rest of the film is fairly predictable with a mild but happy ending and the potential for a sequel.
Acting was good with Butterfield delivering quite well. Oldman was solid as usual. Robertson was enjoyable and seemed to work well with Butterfield. Gugino was a good choice and fit her role nicely. Montgomery, Takeda, and the remainder of the supporting cast were solid and enjoyable.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are nicely done with a solid, realistic feel. Even on Mars. CGI and effects are good without taking over the film. Dialogue is nice with good depth. Sound and soundtrack are good.
The Space Between Us is a nice adventure romance flick aimed at younger teens that seems to hit the mark well. The story has enough depth to keep adults entertained as well, making this a good choice for family movie night.
With very mild sexuality, mild gore and violence, and a bit of foul language, this should be fine for preens and above.
