Scott is an accomplished thief fresh out of prison when he is recruited by Dr. Pym, a scientist who has found a way to shrink a man to insect size while increasing his strength. Together the two must protect the technology and keep it from falling into the wrong hands.
Paul Rudd (Scott/Ant-Man), Michael Douglas (Dr. Hank Pym), Evangeline Lilly (Hope), Corey Stoll (Darren/Yellowjacket), Bobby Cannavale (Paxton), Anthony Mackie (Sam/Falcon), Michael Pena (Luis).
Ant-Man at first glance looks like a Marvel misfire aimed at children. But despite the somewhat common plot, the film brings some good laughs and a few nice surprises. Once Scott is recruited by Dr. Pym he must become familiar with the Ant suit and how to shrink. As this brings some laughs, it also moves the plot along setting up subsequent action scenes well. The remainder of the film is a funny and fairly fast moving sci-fi adventure which adds some good depth to the Marvel universe.
Acting was solid with Rudd doing quite well. Douglas proved he can still deliver and seemed to work nicely with Rudd. Lilly was good, and Stoll fit the antagonist role perfectly. Cannavale was enjoyable in his more serious role, as was Mackie. Pena was absolutely hysterical and contributed strongly here.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good though CGI is what brought this one to life with some nicely done and out of the ordinary effects and action. Super-sizing Thomas the Train was hysterical. Dialogue had good depth and moved things along well. Sound and soundtrack are enjoyable.
Overall Ant-Man was a bit of a surprise. We didn't expect much from this one but found ourselves laughing and engaged with the story and characters before all was done. Fans of the Marvel franchise or sci-fi should enjoy this well rounded and fun film that includes a focus on family along with the laughs and action.
With some mild sexuality, mild foul language, violence and a bit of gore, this should actually be fine for young teens and above.
