Movie review: Ocean's 8

Debbie Ocean, Danny's estranged sister, plans a spectacular heist at New York City's star-studded Met Gala. Of course she must first assemble the perfect all-female team.

Sandra Bullock (Debbie), Cate Blanchett (Lou), Anne Hathaway (Daphne), Mindy Kaling (Amita), Helena Bonham Carter (Rose), Rihanna (Nine Ball), Dakota Fanning (Penelope), Awkwafina (Constance).

Ocean's 8 extends the story of Danny Ocean and his incredible capers to his estranged sister, Debbie. Following the family crime template, Debbie plots an incredible heist at the NYC Met Gala with an all-female team of fellow criminals.
The film moves fast as Debbie assembles her team, then slows slightly as some extra drama is added. The plot now solidified, including a twist or two, and the film is off and running again as we follow each step of the heist. While this sounds great, it really is not. The energy and fun established in this franchise failed to make the journey to this film. Decent, yes, but a bit lacking compared to other films in the franchise.

Acting was decent other than from Bullock whom I don't care for much anyway. Blanchett delivered an interesting performance, as did Carter who is a bit unusual anyway. Hathaway was fun and did nicely, as did Kaling, Awkwafina, and Fanning. Rihanna was okay but she feels carried by her looks rather than her skills.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are decent and fitting for the film. Action scenes were mild but enjoyable. Dialogue could have had a bit more humor but was fairly solid. Sound and soundtrack are enjoyable.

Overall Ocean's 8, while being a bit disappointing as part of the Ocean's franchise, is a mild crime comedy that many will still enjoy.

Nothing much here to limit audience age. Teens and above should be fine with this one.
