Crypto-zoological agency Monarch has identified many god-sized monsters around the world, including Godzilla. Facing off against the monsters, Emma discovers they can be controlled. But not all the monsters may be a threat.
Kyle Chandler (Mark), Vera Farmiga (Emma), Millie Brown (Madison), Ken Watanabe (Dr. Serizawa), Ziyi Zhang (Dr. Chen), Bradley Whitford (Stanton), Sally Hawkins (Vivienne), Charles Dance (Jonah).
Godzilla: King of the Monsters launches with some brief history, character re-introductions, and plot setup. With things in motion, focus shifts to Emma and her drive to control the monsters along with belief they may not all be a threat. Add in estranged husband Mark, some deception by Monarch, and the appearance of Godzilla's nemesis King Ghidorah, and things get moving in several directions. The remainder of the film is a mix of action and drama with some nice monster battles.
Acting was pretty good with Chandler and Farmiga delivering as usual and working well together. Brown was solid, as was Watanabe. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid and interesting.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are good with a nice solid feel. CGI and action scenes are enjoyable and fit well with older Godzilla films without adding new or unnecessary effects. Dialogue was good, though there was a bit more focus on the drama than we would like. Sound and soundtrack are decent.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a reasonably well done Godzilla flick that fits nicely with previous films. Despite the appearance of many other monsters, both friend and foe, this one was a bit light on the monster fights but at the same time, told a nice story. Those looking purely for the monster battles may be slightly disappointed.
With some violence, gore, foul language, and disturbing images, this should be fine for teens and above.
