Movie review: Mandy

A couple living quietly and peacefully in the secluded Pacific Northwest have their lives shattered when a religious fanatic cult leader with demonic henchmen arrives and kidnaps Mandy, sending her husband Red into a vengeful rage.

Nicolas Cage (Red), Andrea Riseborough (Mandy), Linus Roache (Jeremiah), Ned Dennehy (Brother Swan), Olwen Fouere (Marlene), Richard Brake (Chemist), Bill Duke (Caruthers), Line Pillet (Lucy).

The studio description of Mandy is probably the best thing about the film. From the start Red and Mandy feel like a couple with a whole lot of history and problems we hear nothing about. Next up, the completely random selection of Mandy by a completely insane religious cult leader. Add in some demonic henchmen for the cult leader to order around, color every scene in a strange way and you have the film; Mandy.

Acting added to the mess with Cage overacting, forgetting to act, and once again looking like a chain smoking bum. Riseborough was creepy for the duration. Roache felt completely unrealistic and over the top. Dennehy, Fouere, and Brake were decent. Bonus: Cage fans should watch for his on-screen meltdown. Yuck.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were a nightmare. Literally. The weird focus on color in every scene was simply annoying and added nothing to the film. Theft from other film themes with anime and gore only accented the lack of originality. Dialogue was a joke and added very little to the film. Sound and soundtrack were a complete disappointment.

Mandy is something but defining it as entertainment is questionable. With annoying cinematography, disappointing acting and technical work, only die-hard Cage fans or those who enjoy very unusual horror will enjoy this one.

With some sexuality, violence, gore, foul language, drug use, and some more violence, save this one for adults.
