Kevin Costner (Earl), Demi Moore (Tracy), Dane Cook (Mr. Smith), William Hurt (Marshall), Marg Helgenberger (Emma), Danielle Panabaker (Jane), Ruben Santiago-Hudson (Hawkins).

Earl is a serial killer battling his own alter ego, Marshall, who has a fondness for murder. After making a mistake during a murder Earl is in danger of being exposed to the police who are closing in even as he struggles to control his quickly disintegrating life.

This one starts with some brief character development before jumping right into the action and setting the plot for the rest of the film. Earl's mental health problems and the fact he is a serial killer are exposed to the audience from the beginning leaving us to wonder what surprises the film has in store. After Earl's precise methods are showcased for a while the surprises start and continue right up until the exciting ending to the film.

Costner played a serial killer wonderfully bringing emotion and lack of emotion as needed to portray the mental illness of his character. Moore did nicely supporting as did Cook who was also well cast. Hurt delivered a dark side that was absolutely essential to the film while Panabaker was a joy to watch.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were all nicely done and appropriate. Sound and dialogue were also well done and added a quality feel to the film. Special effects consisted mainly of gore scenes and were also nicely done.

Overall this is a wonderful psychological thriller and one of the best portrayals of a serial killer to be seen in years. The level of detail exhibited by Earl was truly impressive. The film exhibits strong quality at all levels and with a story that will leave you on the edge of your seat you don't want to miss this one!

With plenty of violence, gore, mild nudity, and some sexual content save this for older teens and above.

C. Thomas Howell (Frost), Timothy Bottoms (Captain), Lindsey McKeon (Lindsey), Darren Dalton (Cole), Stephen Blackehart (Lonzo), Christopher Showerman (Stack), Anya Benton (Karen).

Several friends end up on an island after surviving a strange storm which disabled their boat. Soon they find themselves running from dinosaurs and encountering other castaways from different periods in time, including a hostile German submarine crew who don't realize WWII is over.

This one kicks off well enough and jumps right into the action with very little character background. Based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs' book the plot here will be familiar to many. As the main characters encounter the other inhabitants of the island the action and suspense increase to a good level right up to the sequel setup type ending. There are more than a couple of plot holes, such as a submarine torpedo that works like a missile out of water rather than failing to leave the launch tube at all as it should have done.

Acting was mixed here with Howell's hands-to-the-head move being a bit overused and ridiculous. Bottoms, McKeon, Benton, and Cole all did a decent job while the rest of the supporting cast seemed a bit inexperienced.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all fairly well done but were overshadowed by the low budget CGI and effects. CGI creatures didn't look real at all and seriously eroded the film quality. Sound and dialogue were appropriate for the film. What is obvious with this one is that C. Thomas Howell is slowly growing as a director and putting out better quality films. But the emphasis is on 'slowly'.

Overall this is a good mid-level entry in the sci-fi fantasy category with a fun story that moves along well. Mild violence is the only thing to limit audience age so this should be fine for preens and above.

Barry Otto (Harry), William Yang (Siberian), Imogen Annesley (Jerboa), Leigh Biolos (Donny), Max Fairchild (Thylo), Dagmar Blahova (Olga), Ralph Cotterill (Sharp), Michael Pate (President).

Harry is convinced that werewolves exist based on film footage taken in Australia by a relative years ago. When intelligence reports of werewolf sightings in Russia surface he goes to Australia to find a werewolf and as luck would have it, one appears in public and is captured at the same time.

This one kicks off interestingly enough with focus on a werewolf pack and their problems. The plot then forms as a werewolf and scientists are brought together forming the basis for the rest of the movie which is your basic class struggle between werewolf and human. With some diversions along the way, the two species finally find a way to live together. Or do they?

Acting was okay here with decent performances by Otto, Annesley, Biolos and Blahova. Yang was actually funny in a serious role while Fairchild seemed a bit over the top.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were okay but it was special effects that get the focus in this one. Lots of changing into wolf scenes and quite a few other sci-fi type scenes that were also nicely done. Particularly enjoyable was the cremated wolf scene. Sound and dialogue were okay with a few cheesy lines and some mildly interesting 80's music. The movie appears to have had a decent budget and general quality was pretty good.

Overall this is a decent horror flick that stands by itself well and doesn't require viewing of the first two in the franchise to make sense. That said, the movie is starting to show it's age with both setting and effects and has a pretty high weirdness factor. Best described as Soft Core Horror, check this one out if you are a fan of werewolves or are looking for horror flick that is a bit different. With some violence, sexuality, and possibly disturbing sci-fi content save this for teens and above.

Robert Thorne (Ray), Jasmine Waltz (Cheri), Bertie Higgins (Robert), J.D. Rudometkin (Allen), Debra Hopkins (Susan), Jay Wisell (Billy).

Robert and Allen decide to take up Harley riding to spice up their lives and buy a couple of bikes from shady biker Ray. What they didn't expect was that Ray and his buddy Billy are a couple of psychopaths who kidnap their wives and require Robert and Allen to commit terrible crimes to get them back.

Despite the 2 star rating this movie was actually better than expected. Starting off with some good violence and brief nudity the film appeared to have real promise. Moving then into character development and plot setup the film stalls for a little while before jumping into the action. At that point the film got a lot better with good suspense, drama, and horror scenes. The pace is maintained up to the end of the film which isn't exactly a twist ending but is a nice surprise. What didn't make sense was why Ray, who proves himself perfectly capable of killing, is using Robert and Allen to do his dirty work.

Acting was good from Thorne and Wisell who both played their parts as psychopaths very well. Waltz wasn't much of an actress but did her gratuitous nude and sex scenes nicely. Higgins and Rudometkin were okay but just didn't feel like they fit their parts very well and Hopkins felt totally miscast.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds all appeared to be cheaply done. Camera work was disappointing with several scenes so dark they required retuning the TV. Film quality wasn't very good and overall the film didn't feel like it had much of a budget. Special effects centered around gore and violence and were nicely done for the most part.

In all this is a mid-level entry in the Thriller category that supports itself with some nudity and gore. The plot had a few holes and production quality was largely absent indicating a lower budget flick. If you are a horror or thriller fan check it out, otherwise pass. With brutal violence, rape, drug use, nudity, and foul language save this for adults and above.

Bridget Fonda (Maggie/Nina), Gabriel Byrne (Bob), Dermot Mulroney (JP), Miguel Ferrer (Kaufman), Anne Bancroft (Amanda), Harvey Keitel (Cleaner).

After being put to death by lethal injection for killing a cop what do you do when you wake up and are still alive? Become a government assassin, or be killed for real this time, of course! Maggie goes along with the plan, doing the dirty work, all the while looking for a way out of the life she has created.

This American remake of La Femme Nikita, which I have never seen, kicks off well with some good action that supports the plot to come and provides some character background. After that things get dramatic with bouts of action until close to the end when things get frenzied for a bit. The plot is good and solid with a story that flows well. The film easily could have been a bit longer with more, and more detailed, action scenes and exploration of the dramatic side which might have helped since it felt a bit rushed.

Acting was good from Fonda with nice energy and role changes. Not to mention she is fun to look at. Byrne and Mulroney both did a good job supporting while Ferrer further refined his role as a jerk. Keitel and Bancroft also contributed nicely to the film.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were all nicely done and the film apparently had a decent budget. Effects cenetered around physical violence and a nice explosion and were also well done. Sound was a bit rough with extreme highs and lows while dialogue was good.

Overall this is a very enjoyable action flick that is very good in many areas but excellent in none. Well worth the watch so put this in the top half of your Must See list. With violence, foul language, mild sexuality and nudity, save this for older teens and above.

Brittany Murphy (Amy), Eriq La Salle (Boomer), Justin Hartley (Dan), Bruce Davison (Mark), Paul Logan (Boyd).

While blowing the top off a mountain you activate a major fault line and trigger an enormous earthquake that threatens to rip apart the entire U.S. so what do you do? Find a scientist to advise you, get the military to use one of their spiffy top-secret weapons, and throw every explosive you can find at it!

This is one of those movies that looks good at first with some character and plot development up front leading to some nice action. Before long however you realize the CGI is seriously overused, low quality, and repetitive not to mention the plot can't seem to figure out what direction it should go. It is then you realize the title of the movie should actually be "Oops". When the only person who can save the world is busy sitting in field wondering if their family is okay. . Oops. When the guy who may have started the whole mess is now running around with the military at his disposal, tons of explosives, and nobody even asking his name. . .oops. When you use the same CGI clips more than twice. . . Oops.

Acting was another oops. Murphy and La Salle did nicely but their characters just didn't make a lot of sense. Davison and others supporting did okay but just couldn't save this one from plopping solidly into B-movie territory.

CGI was seriously lacking in quality and many sequences were overused. Special effects were mixed with decent explosions but again, many were overused. Sets left something to be desired with repeated shots of mining or quarry shots. Dialogue and sound were okay but didn't really add much to the quality fo the film.

Overall. . . Oops. Aside from the mentioned problems the film had a serious lack of energy or believeability on several levels and unless you are a serious catastrophe fan you should pass on this one. There isn't even anything in the movie to limit audience age.

Leonardo DiCaprio (Billy), Matt Damon (Colin), Jack Nicholson (Frank), Mark Wahlberg (Dignam), Martin Sheen (Queenan), Ray Winstone (French), Vera Farmiga (Madolyn), Alec Baldwin (Ellerby).

A police tactic for fighting organized crime has been to plant a mole in the organization. But what happens when the crime organization does the same and both organizations realize they have a mole? The rules of engagement change dramatically and nobody is safe anymore.

Not a big crime drama fan, this one was a wonderfully well done surprise! The film kicks off with character development and plot setup that includes some good action. From there the action and suspense escalate to a fever pitch as the crime organization and police force both scramble desperately to figure out who the mole is in their respective organization while at the same time continuing their operations. By the end of the movie we don't know who to trust and it almost feels as if the police and criminals have switched roles. Add in some awesome surprises and you will be on the edge of your seat before this ride is done.

Acting was excellent here with DiCaprio doing very well as a beady eyed criminal. Damon put forth a good performance as usual while Nicholson's performance reminds us that he isn't even close to being done with acting yet. Wahlberg was good although his character was a bit hard to swallow being overly abusive to co-workers which is hard to imagine being tolerated these days. Supporting work was also well done by everyone. Kudos to Scorsese for his work as Director with this one.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were all nicely done and contributed to the quality feel of the film. Special effects were fight and action focused and done very nicely, particularly the blood spatters which are not often seen with such clarity. Dialogue and sound were well done and the cuts from loud music to dialogue were an interesting touch.

Overall this is an excellent crime drama with exceptional quality on every level. Put this in the top half of your must see list but be aware this one will run 2 1/2 hours! With plenty of graphic and brutal violence, pervasive foul language, drug content, and some sexuality save this one for older teens and above.

Brandon Adams (Fool), Everett McGill (Dad), Wendy Robie (Mom), A.J. Langer (Alice), Ving Rhames (Leroy), Sean Whalen (Roach), Bill Cobbs (Grandpa Booker), Kelly Jo Minter (Ruby), Jeremy Roberts (Spenser).

Fool's Mom is sick, they can't pay rent and are being evicted, and he is the man of the house at 13 yrs old. When Leroy offers him a job helping with a house burglary Fool agrees. But once in the house they find the cannabalistic residents are worse than being caught by the police.

From Wes Craven, this one kicks off a bit slow with character development and plot setup but quickly turns into a roller-coaster ride of insanity. Once Fool comes into contact with Dad, Mom and Alice things get really strange and interesting. As the story continues we begin to feel stuck in a FunHouse from hell. Sprinkled with bits of humor, and a bit B-movie campy at times, the movie also has some good gore and scary parts so there is plenty here to hold audience interest.

Adams was pretty good in his role while McGill and Robie were both awesome nutters! Whalen was also a joy to watch while Rhames did a nice job supporting.

Camera work, sets and background were all nicely done. Although the setting was almost entirely inside a house the sets didn't feel cheap or minimal in any way. Sound and dialogue were nicely done but special effects and sets really stole the show. Gore and creature scenes were very nicely done while the film wouldn't have worked without the creativity seen with the sets.

Overall this is a nice horror flick with a little something for everyone. A bit dated, it is starting to show its age but is still quite entertaining. Mild foul language, gore, glood, terror and violence to save this for older teens and above.

Ellen Burstyn (Chris), Max von Sydow (Father Merrin), Lee J Cobb (Lt. Kinderman), Jason Miller (Father Karras), Linda Blair (Regan).

(Call me lazy but this one review really works for both versions of the film).
If this horror classic doesn't terrify you, maybe you need a shrink. Movie actress Chris realizes an evil spirit may possess her daughter Regan. Against formidable odds two priests, Father's Merrin and Karras, try to exorcise the demon. A superb meditation about the nature of evil, The Exorcist was created with adults in mind and isn't appropriate for youngsters. (I didn't write that but took it from N-flix.) It just doesn't make much sense to review and revisit the plot here since this movie has been out so long, has been so popular (even today), and has been reviewed countless times.

What is unique about this version of the film is the extra 11 minutes of footage along with excellently restored/enhanced color and sound quality. I almost felt like the movie was made last year! Very nicely done. And even if you have seen this before it is worth seeing again for a single 5 second scene, Regan (Linda Blair) walking down the stairs backwards!! Made in 1973, that scene reminded me of the character movements popular right now in movies like The Ring and The Grudge! Absolutely awesome!

This was and I think will continue to be one of the great scary movies of all time. Although I'm not a huge fan, watching this one every few years brings me enjoyment and I continue to catch new details. This time it was the use of tokens in the background throughout the movie. There were several scenes with owls, turtles and other symbols both as part of the story and in the background scenery which I found quite interesting. I also found it amusing that although this movie is setup for sequels in several different ways the franchise really didn't endure after the first film.

Take the R rating on this one seriously. Graphic, violent, disturbing scenes are common is extremely descriptive vulgar language. This film really is for adults on several levels.

Kenneth is the local weirdo, appearing somewhat mentally challenged and having a not well hidden crush on Catherine. One night hazing by local med students lands him in the hospital in a coma but after Catherine gives him an experimental drug his soul is able to leave his body and posess others, starting with those who put him in the hospital.

I was a bit disappointed with this one from the start since it looked a lot like 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' and surprise, the film ended feeling like a ripoff of pieces from a lot of other films. The first 15 minutes is plot setup and character development before the film sits and spins stuck at the conversion point between story and horror. Finally jerking firmly into terror mode the film gets a bit better for a while building up to a nice premature psychological scare toward the end. But whoops, it came to soon so they throw a twist in trying to differentiate this film from those it cloned. The result is a mediocre horror flick that really isn't very scary at all and may even have you rooting for the antagonist before all is done.

Acting from Kebbel was pretty good and Potts put forth a decent performance as well. Beyond that the supporting work left a bit to be desired with a general lack of energy.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were fairly well done though nothing truly special. Special effects were mainly gore shots which were well done and added some value to the film. Dialogue and sound were okay but again, nothing special.

Overall this is a good entry level horror flick if you don't have a lot of experience with the genre. If you do you will spend a lot of time with this one saying 'Hey, they did that in another film already!' With some gore, blood, violence, and foul language save this for older teens and above.

Gil Bellows (Ben), Maxim Roy (Lisa), Bruce Dinsmore (Whitefield), Judd Nelson (Malcom), Jesse Todd (Knutt), Donny Quinn (Assistant), Isabella Rossellini (Carla).

Ben and Lisa are a pair of reporters who stumble across a twisted invasion plot by space aliens. As the two follow the conspiracy they quickly don't know who to trust and although they know the solution, implementation could be more difficult than they expected.

This one kicks off nicely with some good plot setup action and character development before falling back on special effects and action to keep the film interesting. As the plot loses solidity the film turns into a generic sci-fi with an ending that most will see coming well ahead of time.

Acting by Bellows, Roy and Dinsmore was decent if unexciting as were performances by most of the supporting cast. Nelson was back as a bit of a nutball which seems to fit him well. I was surprised by Rossellini who had crummy lines and was made to look about as unappealing as possible, a serious waste of her talents.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were all nicely done and the film appears to have had a nice budget. Special effects were well done if a bit overdone once the full blown CGI kicked in. Less would have been so much more with this one. Dialogue was okay and sound was well done.

Overall this ends up a middle-of-the-road generic sci-fi that really doesn't bring anything new to the genre. With better production the film might have been more but instead it ends up feeling generic in this area as well. Worth a watch if you are a devoted genre fan, otherwise pass for something with more quality.

Jason Behr (Eliott), Emma Catherwood (Nim), Joe Ferrara (Blackbeard).

U.S. businessman Eliott is kidnapped overseas by political terrorists who are focused on torturing him for crimes he supposedly committed against their people. Streaming his torture live online as paid entertainment the world watches as Eliott is rendered senseless.

Surprisingly I enjoyed this film quite a bit. On the surface this looks like a simple torture flick but if you think about it a bit the film achieved several things. A kidnap and torture plot, the film is able to evoke feelings of both sympathy and contempt for the kidnappers who are obviously politically oriented, while never letting you know their race or group affiliation. The torture of Eliott also focused so simply yet specifically it was hard to not feel his terror and helplessness. And a nice twist to the plot surprises you just when you think you know what is happening. Even the ending, which many seem to dislike, sent the message that the distance between our daily lives and unbelieveable horror isn't much at all. All of this is even more impressive given the minmalistic sets, backgrounds, and low budget of the film.

Acting was very good from the 3 main characters. Behr delivered more emotion than expected and Ferrara played an excellent, possibly insane, terrorist. Catherwood was good in a very subdued role.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all minimal and added greatly to the authentic feel of the film. Dialogue and sound were good as were special effects which were mostly gore focused.

Overall this isn't simply a horror film, it is a psychological horror film. If you want mindless gore, go find something else. If you enjoy the psychology of horror, terror, and want a film to think about give this a shot and put it about the middle of your Must See list.

With plenty of graphic violent torture scenes and foul language save this for the oldest teens and above.

A spooky collection of stories featuring a strange Father's Day celebration, a weird meteorite, a savage monster in a crate, a plethora of cockroaches, and a story of revenge. Directed by George Romero with help from Stephen King the collection is a campy and silly as it is spooky.

This is a fun little collection of stories that toss in a bit of campy silliness to go along with the creepiness and BOO moments. Stephen King himself stars in the meteorite segment while Leslie Nielson, Ted Danson, Ed Harris, and Hal Holbrook star in others. The Father's Day segment was okay but not very interesting. I really enjoyed the meteorite and monster in a crate segments. Meteorite was a bit unusual and I enjoyed seeing King acting while the monster in a crate segment had some nice BOO and gore moments. The revenge segment was also nicely done and original.

Acting was mixed here with Harris and King both being obviously inexperienced. Barbeau played an evil woman superbly while Nielson did amazingly in a serious role supported by Danson who also did pretty good.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were okay though they are showing their age here. Overall quality is also suffering the effects of time. Dialogue and sound were good and I liked the comic book based theme of the film. Special effects were okay with some being a bit clumsy and others exhibiting very good quality.

Overall this is an enjoyable collection of stories that were done pretty well. The thing to remember is this is based on the comic book of the same name and does incorporate a fair amount of campy humor so it isn't just a straight horror flick.

With a fair amount of foul language, sci-fi content, horror and gore save this for older teens and above.

This is a film by stuntman Hal Needham about a car race called The Cannonball Run. He is real, the race is real, and he was in the race driving the ambulance seen in the film. The big name stars in the film are entrants in the race and will do anything to win. Fast driving, silly sabotage, sexual innuendo, and fast cars along with a cast of seasoned professionals having a ton of fun are what this is all about.

The plot: drive coast to coast as fast as you can, the shortest time wins. That's all you need to know because it doesn't matter. This is about big stars with fast cars being silly and sexy. Yes, the film is campy. Yes, there are some awkward moments when line timing is off, or when Reynolds (and others) can't stop laughing. And yes, it doesn't matter because it is still good fun. The cars are a lot of fun, the stunts are good and fairly creative, and the slapstick is non-stop.

I'd critique acting but there are just to many big names in this one. Most everyone was decent or better and I can't think of any of the known actors who were bad. Some of the non-actors were a bit rough but that is to be expected. Camera work, sets, and background were all well done. The cars were great! Dialogue and sound were good though nothing very exciting.

Some mild slapstick violence, mild foul language, and sexual innuendo but this should be okay for preens and above.

Overall, just a lot of silly fun good for family movie night or if you want something funny with hot cars and girls.

John Lithgow (Malcolm/Robert), Jon Tenney (Pilot), Ryan Phillippe (Harlan), Hank Azaria (Carter), Billy Bob Thornton (Jack), Kelly Lynch (Lucy), Jon Bon Jovi (Danny), Judge Reinhold (Policeman).

Jack, Carter and Harlan are commercial pot growers working for Malcolm when he is killed in front of them by a helicopter pilot. Rather than lose their earnings for the last year by walking away they decide to harvest and cash out the crop which proves to be much more difficult than they thought.

This one starts off pretty good with brief background then the death of Malcolm in front of the pot farmers which terrifies them for obvious reasons. As they decide to harvest the crop and cash out things get interesting for a little while before the drama kicks in and the film starts to feel like it is going nowhere. Finally toward the end the film gets a bit more interesting with an either disappointing or deserved ending depending on your perspective.

Acting was decent from everyone with Phillippe doing an exceptional job as a paranoid pot newbie. Azaria was also enjoyable as the expert hippie farmer. Thornton, Bon Jovi, and Reinhold all deliver as usual while Lynch just felt out of place and disconnected from her role.

Camera work felt okay while film quality was horrible. Disclaimer: I was streaming this so the bad picture quality may have been poor bandwidth. Sets and backgrounds were good and supported the film well. Special effects were minimal but added good quality to the film.

Overall this was a decent film though I'm not sure how to classify it since it has drama, suspense, and some good dark humor but not enough of any one to fall solidly in a category. I know there are many out there trying to talk about the social statement the film is making, linking it to the War On Drugs, and generally making it more than it is. This is a simply entertaining, though not completely realistic, look at a seldom seen industry. 13 years after the original film a distress signal is received from planet Sirius 6B and a team of rescuers is sent from Earth only to find a few remaining survivors defending themselves against the Screamers. But not only have the Screamers evolved from simple killing machines to being able to combine with and imitate humans, their misson may have changed as well.

This one kicks off with a bit of action that not only introduces us to a new cast but refreshes our memory as to what a Screamer was in the beginning. From there though the film moves into dramatic plot development where it languishes for most of its remainder with a sprinkling of action and horror sequences. Toward the end of the film the plot, which anyone will have guessed by that time, is finally revealed as no big surprise.

Acting was mediocre from everyone involved, even Henriksen. They played their parts and fit their roles for the most part but there just didn't seem to be much spark between actors or any overall energy.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were good though some parts were quite dark. Special effects were okay, centering mostly around gore shots which were very fast or tons of blood. CGI was good with nice creature and physical effects. Sound and dialogue were nothing special.

Overall a decent sci-fi with a solid plot, acting work, and effects but a less than exciting energy level. A good sequel to the original but it could have had a lot more action for my tastes. Sam races to find his fiancee's killer before the Reapers find him!

This one kicked off looking like a dud with some cheesy drama working as character and plot development. Once the plot got going however the film got interesting. The plot isn't completely new but it is pretty solid and a well developed story and the movie moves along nicely. Obviously a low budget film, the biggest problem here is the film biting off more than it could chew. The potential here was awesome but with inexperienced actors and camera work paired with low budget sets, effects, and film it just never developed beyond mediocre.

Acting as mentioned looked inexperienced by everyone. That said Mobley, Rouse, Hodges and Nelson all did a fair job. Edgeman was a bonus being lovely to watch although she didn't have a single line.

Camera work, sets and background were all obviously low budget and film quality was obviously low. Effects were minimal and again, obviously low budget.

Overall for a horror flick this ends up with a lower rating due to quality. At the same time this is a pretty good film considering the obvious lack of budget. If you are a horror fan put this one about the middle of your Must See list and give it a chance.

I don't recall any nudity, pervasive foul language, or sex scenes so violence would be the only audience limiting factor. This should be okay for teens and above.

Delicatessen

Pascal Benezech (Tried to Escape), Dominique Pinon (Louison), Marie_Laure Dougnac (Julie), Karin Viard (Plusse), Ticky Holgado (Marcel Tapioca), Anne-Marie Pisani (Mrs Tapioca), Chick Ortega (Postman), Silvie Laguna (Aurore Interligator).

Down on his luck clown Louison finds work and a place to live in an apartment building run by a butcher who also runs a deli on the ground floor. He also finds romance with Julie, the butcher's daughter. What he doesn't know is that the butcher is butchering tenants an selling the meat. But Julie knows and must decide whether to expose her father to save Louison from being his next victim.

I think to properly review this film I would have to watch it another 10 times. There is so much going on here, and it is so strange and convoluted, that it is difficult to follow everything. The version I watched was in French with subtitles so first warning; stay away if you don't do subtitles. There is a plot to the film but it is minimal compared to everything else that happens which is primarily character development going in multiple directions at once. Cannibalism, sexual appetite, comedy, suspense, it has a bit of everything. I particularly enjoyed Aurore finding new ways to try and kill herself, the latex covered toilet plunger kidnappers traversing the walls, and the snail eating basement dweller.

Acting was good from most everyone considering the material and genre of the film. Dougnac was my favorite with good energy and expression.

Camera work was good but sets and backgrounds were awesome with excellent detail and creativity lending humor and oddity to the film while also providing good support. Special effects were minimal, mostly around costuming and sets.

Overall this is a very very strange film that will likely appeal to a very narrow audience with a very open mind. I don't recall any nudity but there was some mild foul language, implied sexuality and adult concepts. Save this one for older teens and above.

1941

Released: 1979

Dan Aykroyd (Frank), Ned Beatty (Ward), John Belushi (Wild Bill), Lorraine Gary (Joan), Christopher Lee (Wolfgang), Tim Matheson (Loomis), Toshiro Mifune (Akiro), Warren Oates (Madman), Robert Stack (General Stilwell), Treat Williams (Stretch).

After the attack on Pearl Harbor people in California panic figuring the next attack will be on their coastline. As civilians and military personell race to prepare for attack a Japanese submarine arrives on the coast, selecting Hollywood as their target.

This was a fun little spoof though it isn't quite as funny as some other films like Stripes. It does make you wonder though what Californians were thinking back in those days. There isn't much character development up-front and the plot is set with text narrative at the beginning of the film. From there it jumps right into satire and drama of the day. If you can imagine what the fear was like in 1941, then add goofballs and mix well, you will probably enjoy the film. Anyone else, like my current viewing partner, will probably not see the comedy or entertainment value.

Acting was interesting if not good by most here. Aykroyd, Beatty, Gary, Matheson were all a bit green but good. Belushi was an obnoxious hysterical jerk as usual, though green as well.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were all nicely done with the film having a decidedly 1940's feel. Special effects were good and added an authentic feel to the film. I particularly enjoyed the ferris wheel rolling down the pier and a naked woman wrapped around a periscope. Sound was good while dialogue was decidedly campy.

Overall this is a fun little film with mild nudity and foul language but should be okay for teens and above. The humor will definitely appeal to a select audience and won't be enjoyed by everyone.

Idris Elba (Derek), Beyonce Knowles (Sharon), Ali Larter (Lisa), Jerry O'Connell (Ben), Bonnie Perlman (Marge), Christine Lahti (Detective Reese), Bruce McGill (Joe).

Derek is living the dream with a great job, friends, looks, great wife, new house, and young child. And when sexy office temp Lisa decides she wants to be a part of Derek's life things get warped and twisted in a heartbeat as she tries to seduce and destroy her way into his life.

This one starts off slow looking like another prime-time drama that will have you snoozing before the first commercial break. But when temp Lisa shows up at work things quickly get much more interesting, and sexy. As Lisa tries to pry into Derek's life, things get more and more twisted and the film gets even more interesting. The ending wasn't a complete surprise as this plot has been done before many times with only a few variations but it didn't look like the direction the film was headed either.

Acting was good from Elba and awesome from Larter who played a nutball supremely. Although she wasn't that great an actress, Knowles was surprisingly good considering what I expected. O'Connell and McGill were both lukewarm as usual.

Camera work, sets and backgrounds were all nicely done and exhibited good quality. Special effects were primarily stunts but fairly well done. Dialogue and sound were also good while soundtrack had some unusual but interesting tunes in addition to Knowles doing some singing.

Overall this was a decent yet very predictible thriller. Yes, you could find better but you could also do a lot worse. If you enjoy a nice thriller without a ton of gore, foul language, or actual sex scenes this is a good choice and a teen girl fave right now. Drop it in about the middle of your Must See list if you like the genre. Sexually suggestive content and dialogue, and minor violence but this should be fine for teens and above.

The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations

Star rating: 4 out of 5

Chris Carmack (Sam), Rachel Miner (Jenna), Melissa Jones (Vicki), Kevin Yon (Goldburg), Lynch Travis (Detective Glenn), Sarah Habel (Elizabeth), Mia Serafino (Rebecca), Richard Wilkinson (Lonnie).

Sam has the ability to travel through time which he uses to help the police solve difficult crime cases. When his murdered girlfriend's sister claims to have new evidence exonerating Lonnie of her murder Sam goes back in time to find the truth, inadvertently disrupting the timeline and creating a serial killer.

I've always found the Butterfly Effect interesting, particularly when applied to time travel. This film did a good job of conveying the frustration of understanding how timelines react to slight changes, even if you don't think you changed anything. The plot wasn't perfect in this one but about as close as you can get with constantly changing reality. The film starts off nicely showing us how the time travel works for Sam, then jumps into the plot. No real BOO moments but a couple of nice twists keep the film interesting right to the end.

Acting was okay from Carmack and Miner and they seemed to have nice energy. Jones was crazy and sexy as usual while Goldburg, Travis, and Wilkinson all did nicely in supporting roles. Camera work was good though the film was a bit dark both literally and in mood. Sets and backgrounds were okay, nothing special. Special effects were minimal but nicely done with a couple of nice gore shots. Dialogue and sound were also pretty good.

Overall a decent sci-fi thriller and good addition to the franchise that stands by itself without requiring viewing of the first 2 films for understanding. My only disappointment is that the mood of the film is very dark and depressing. Otherwise, a very enjoyable film particularly for time-travel fans.

With foul language, gore, and a fairly explicit sex scene with nudity save this one for adults and the oldest of teens.

Chaney Kley (Kyle), Emma Caulfield (Caitlin), Lee Cormie (Michael), Grant Piro (Larry), Sullivan Stapleton (Matt), Joshua Anderson (Young Kyle), Emily Browning (Young Caitlin).

Like most of us Kyle grew up with the Tooth Fairy and was told not to look at her. So when Kyle looks one night and sees her he learns that once you see her she can kill you. Now all grown up, Kyle is returning to his hometown to help defend them from the Tooth Fairy who has focused her evil upon them.

This one starts off with some nice background that sets the mood and plot for the rest of the film. After a brief lull, the film picks up the pace right up to the end. I enjoyed the twist on the Tooth Fairy story being that once seen she could kill you since I was raised to believe she simply wouldn't leave you money if you saw her. It made for a nice horror plot and BOO moments even if it wasn't completely solid.

Acting was good from Kley and Caulfield with nice energy. Cormie, Stapleton, Anderson and Browning all did nicely in supporting roles. Camera work, sets and backgrounds were all appropriate and added to the feel of the film. Special effects and CGI were fairly simple but supported the story perfectly without trying to steal the spotlight. Dialogue and sound were also nicely done.

Overall this is a decent horror flick with some good BOO moments. Those with some fear of the dark or fond of BOO scares will probably enjoy this the most while the rest will find it a middle-of-the-road film. The nice thing about this one is that it keeps the story and effects simple while sticking to the plot rather than taking trips down dramatic side-roads with the characters.

With scary supernatural horror and images and some brief language save this for teens and above. Definitely not for children who still believe in the Tooth Fairy as it will scare them silly!

Ben Stiller (Alex), Chris Rock (Marty), David Schwimmer (Melman), Jada Smith (Gloria), Sacha Cohen (Julien), Cedric (Maurice), Bernie Mac (Zuba), Alec Baldwin (Makunga), Sherri Shepherd (Mom), Will I Am (Moto Moto).

A rescue attempt to save Alex and his friends instead leaves them stranded in Africa. As fate would have it though, Alex finds his family in the process and struggles to rejoin the pride led by his father. All the while his friends try to find a way back to the zoo in New York.

I actually enjoyed this one as much as the first if not more. It felt like in this one they focused on the things from the first movie that people enjoyed. The plot, although a bit immature, is more solid than I expected and helped to move the film along. There isn't much character development up front though it really isn't needed, but the main characters do develop throughout the film. Although this is mainly about the laughs, there are a few tender moments and the requisite happy ending.

Acting is hard to critique with animation but the voice-over work was very well done. Animation was nice and easy to watch. Dialogue was good although some mild crude humor was a surprise. Soundtrack was nicely done with some good tunes.

Overall a decent flick for kids 6 to probably 13 or so. Adults may find it a bit boring but the humor helps keep things alive. My favorites are the penguins which are absolutely hysterical. A good choice for family movie night.

Transformers II: Revenge of the Fallen

Shia LaBeouf (Sam), Megan Fox (Mikaela), Josh Duhamel (Lennox), Tyrese Gibson (Epps), John Turturro (Simmons), Ramon Rodriguez (Leo), Kevin Dunn (Ron), Julie White (Judy).

Once again the Autobots are calling on Sam to help them battle the evil Decepticons who are returning to Earth in search of an energy source. Unfortunately for Sam the location of the source currently resides in his brain.

Surprisingly the plot made sense to me with this one. I liked that there was some history around the origins of the Transformers and their time on Earth which made the plot feel like it actually had some meat. Aside from that, this is all CGI once again. Not being a huge franchise fan it is difficult to know which robot is which and on which side they are fighting when you only get a clear view of them for milliseconds. My take: If the CGI is so bad you are afraid to show it, then don't use it. We got to see the actors faces just fine, why not the Transformers?

Acting was a bit disappointing. LaBeouf isn't bad but he isn't great either. Fox has no real skills other than impressing us with her body, and letting us know she is impressing us with her body, and needs to get over herself. Duhamel, Gibson and Turturro all did very well but their parts were so brief they couldn't save this one. And what was up with the idiot Autobot twins? Was there a point?

Camera work was good, as were sets and backgrounds but CGI ruined it for me. Scale was off in more than a few scenes and the constant movement of the Transformers to avoid showing them in detail was just annoying. Sound was also artifical sounding with extreme differences between lows and highs. I understand it was done for impact but it is still a bit extreme.

Overall, great movie for teenage boys who will also appreciate and giggle at the crude sexual humor such as humping dogs and robots. Unfortunately, they will also enjoy the cursing by the idiot Autobot twins that seemed inappropriate for a PG-13 rated film. For adults, mildly entertaining at best.

Violence, foul language, crude sexual references, and brief drug but be real, your preen boy is going to watch this whether you allow it or not.

Twilight

Kristen Stewart (Bella), Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen), Billy Burke (Charlie Swan), Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen), Peter Facinelli (Carlisle Cullen), Anna Kendrick (Jessica).

Based on the Stephenie Meyer novel, Bella moves to a small town to live with her father and falls in love with classmate Edward who she realizes is a vampire. As their relationship is growing Bella falls into danger when a rival vampire clan challenges the Cullen family.

This one starts off a bit slow but steadily increases pace until it is flying. This is the best vampire movie I have seen in a long time due to the romanticizing of the vampires rather than portraying them as blood thirsty monsters and using tons of special effects. There is still some great action and thrills including some nicely done CGI. Basically a teen movie, Twilight is a good mix of drama, High School angst, first love energy, sci-fi, and suspense. A very refreshing change from the blood and guts vampire monster movies usually spewed from production studios. I haven’t read the books yet but understand they are better than the movie which explains many of the bad reviews.

Acting was pretty good from everyone however I think they could have cast Stewart better. She just doesn’t show much emotion throughout the movie though she was playing a highly emotional role. Despite her lack of energy, this was still a very good film. Pattison played his part very well but it was Facinelli I thought did exceptionally well and made a wonderfully creepy yet likeable vampire Dad.

Camera work, effects, sound and dialogue were all well done. Sets were great with excellent forest shots and background scenery.

Overall, this was a very good vampire movie even if it did have an After School Special type ending and high teen appeal. I will enjoy seeing this one again in the future. Some violence and sensuality but preens and above will be fine with this one.

Goldie Hawn (Gloria), Chevy Chase (Tony), Burgess Meredith (Mr. Hennessey), Rachel Roberts (Delia/Gerda), Eugene Roche (Archbishop), Dudley Moore (Stanley), Brian Dennehy (Fergie), Billy Barty (J.J.).

Gloria is a sweet, happy librarian who uncovers a plot to kill the Pope. Fearing for her life she stumbles across Stanley and enlists the aid of local cop, Tony. And while Tony and Gloria fall in love the mystery gets more and more strange.

This one kicks off with some silliness and mystery and just keeps the silly coming throughout the film. There is a plot but really it is just an excuse for some comedy. With a bit of slapstick, one-liners, sexual innuendo, and racism there is a bit of something for everyone to laugh at and be offended by. There isn't anything complicated here, just fun energy between the characters and plenty of laughs.

Acting was okay but this wasn't so much about performance as it was comedy. It was nice though to see Hawn and Chase when they were both younger. Hawn was so cute back then and Chase was great at delivering lines with a straight face. Moore was hilarious in this one as well.

Film quality is 1970's at its best. Soft filming, steady camera work, with decent sets and backgrounds. There were some bonuses like Hawn driving down the coast. The soundtrack was good with some songs by Manilow.

Looking back at this film now it is amazing how many awards it won at the time. Although a good 70's genre film along the lines of Overboard or Modern Problems, I think there were others that were better.

This is a good choice for family movie night or if you just want something light and fun without all the CGI and special effects for a change. No nudity, foul language, or much of anything else to limit the audience so preens and above should be fine with this one.

Heath Ledger (Ennis), Jake Gyllenhaal (Jack), Randy Quaid (Joe), Michelle Williams (Alma), Anne Hathaway (Lureen).

In 1963 it wasn't very safe to be publicly gay, even more so if you were a cowboy working with other cowboys and roughnecks, so when Jack and Ennis begin an affair while working as sheepherders they decide to keep things secret. Even from their wives. But as their relationship becomes more passionate, things become more and more difficult.

The critics loved this one and it got a ton of awards. Yet when I look online, a lot of reviewers are disappointed with the film and wondering how it won so many awards. That's also where I'm landing with this one. Yes, Ledger and Gyllenhall put forth pretty impressive performances assuming they are both straight and had no interest in each other. And yes, the scenery was gorgeous throughout the film. And although the plot was pretty simple, yes it was solid. But beyond that the film just didn't have much. The Ennis character was flat, largely unemotional, uncommitted to the relationship, and uncommunicative. Then there was Jack who seemed much more physically oriented, dominant to the point of aggressive, and very committed to the relationship. The two just didn't seem to fit other than being gay. I found myself looking for the emotional connection to the characters in what was supposed to be a love story and it just wasn't there.

Otherwise the film was a quality production. Good camera work, scenery, sets, backgrounds, sound, and dialogue all added to the feel of the film.

Overall this was a good film with decent acting and plot. It just didn't deliver the energy the hype suggested it would have. I enjoyed it, just not as much as I expected I would. If you enjoy dramas, or gay drama you might find some pleasure in this one. With some sexuality, nudity, foul language and brief violence save this for older teens and above.

Robinson Crusoe

Released: 1997

Reviewed: 12.24.09
Star rating: 3 out of 5

Pierce Brosnan (Robinson Crusoe), William Takaku (Friday), Polly Walker (Mary), Ian Hart (Daniel Defoe), James Frain (Robert), Damian Lewis (Patrick).

Robin has the worst luck. Having to kill his friend in a duel over the woman he has loved since he was a child he has to escape his homeland on a cargo ship. The ship then crashes during a storm leaving Robin stranded on a deserted island. As he tries to survive, natives from a neighboring island arrive to practice human sacrifice and he ends up befriending one of them.

I don't do comparisons to either other films or books so if that is what you want, move along.

This one kicks off in the english countryside with some good background and character development before moving to the water for an adventureous boat ride. From then we see Robin on a beautiful island where he manages to build a lovely home. When natives from a nearby island show up Robin is exposed to a religion he has never seen which apparently renews his faith in his own. After befriending one of the natives the story gets a bit more interesting right up to the happily ever after type ending.

Acting was decent with Brosnan putting forth and acceptable performance. Takaku also did nicely and seemed to fit his role well. The rest of the supporting cast also did a good, if brief, job. Camera work, sets and backgrounds were all well done and helped set the film tone. Dialogue and sound were also well done and the film seemed to have the needed budget.

Overall this was a nicely done action adventure flick that represented the story as I remember it pretty well. There wasn't a lot of fluff here, just a simple story with simple performances. I think if you want a recreation of the book you better skip this one but if you just like the story, check it out. With mild violence and brief sensuality this should be fine for preens and above.
