Movie review: A Star Is Born (2018)

Seasoned musician Jackson meets and falls in love with Ally, encouraging her to pursue her dreams as a singer-songwriter even as his own career declines and his relationships are strained due to an ongoing battle with alcoholism.

Lady Gaga (Ally), Bradley Cooper (Jack), Sam Elliott (Bobby), Andrew Dice Clay (Lorenzo), Rafi Gavron (Rez Gavron), Anthony Ramos (Ramon), Dave Chappelle (George), Ron Rifkin (Carl), Michael Harney (Wolfie).

A Star Is Born is the well worn story of a young woman hoping to find stardom when she connects with an existing performer whose career is fading. The two fall in love and as her career begins to soar. But the fairy tale doesn't last long when the experienced performer becomes depressed and alcoholic over the loss of his own fame. As the two move in different directions, while trying to remain together, the drama escalates and defines the remainder of the film through the ending.

Acting was decent with Gaga and Cooper both delivering nicely and appearing to work well together. Elliott was a nice addition, delivered well, and brought some good depth. Clay was a surprise and did reasonably well. Chappelle, Harney, and the remainder of the cast were fairly experienced and delivered well.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good with a realistic feel. Musical performances were well captured throughout. Dialogue was good with nice depth and detail. Sound and soundtrack are good with many enjoyable numbers from both Gaga and Cooper.

Overall A Star Is Born is a nice remake and update of a classic film with a story that never grows old. Those who enjoy a solid drama, or fairy-tale success stories, should enjoy this one. Lady Gaga or Bradley Cooper fans may enjoy it even more.

With some sexuality, mild violence, foul language, and potentially disturbing scenes, save this one for older teens and above.
