Movie review: Insidious: The Last Key

Insidious: The Last Key, the fourth installment in the franchise, continues exploring the haunting of parapsychologist Elise. Called back to her childhood home in New Mexico, Elise and her team return to where it all began in hopes of learning more about the entity responsible.

Lin Shaye (Elise), Angus Sampson (Tucker), Leigh Whannell (Specs), Kirk Acevedo (Garza), Caitlin Gerard (Imogen), Spencer Locke (Melissa), Josh Stewart (Gerald), Tessa Ferrer (Audrey), Aleque Reid (Anna), Bruce Davison (Christian).

Insidious: The Last Key has Elise and her team returning to her New Mexico hometown, and literally her childhood home, to help with a current haunting and learn more about the entity responsible for starting it all. Instead Elise is faced with her unresolved past and the reality nothing has really changed. What follows is more drama than horror, and more confusion than thriller, with an ending that makes it clear the story is not yet over.

Acting was as expected with Shaye delivering a decent performance once again. Sampson and Whannell were enjoyable in supporting roles. Acevedo was solid in a challenging role that he managed well. Gerard, Locke, Ferrer, Reid and the remainder of the cast did pretty well as did Davison in his smaller role.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are reasonably well done. CGI and effects are enjoyable, fitting, and creature effects are nicely done. Dialogue is good though a bit more depth would have been nice. Sound and soundtrack are okay.

Overall Insidious: The Last Key felt more like a sci-fi drama than it did a horror flick. The scares were mild at best, the horror thin, and the storyline is quite simply growing old. Sadly this franchise feels like it is losing energy and focus. Those invested in the storyline should enjoy this one while those looking for a solid horror flick without needing a history lesson on the franchise may be disappointed.

With some violence and gore, mild foul language, disturbing scenes and situations, this should be fine for teens and above.
