Movie review: The Equalizer 2

The Equalizer is back in this sequel that reunites Denzel Washington with his 2014 role as Robert McCall, retired CIA Black Ops operative. We catch up with Robert working as a Lyft driver moonlighting as a vigilante. When Susan, a long-time friend is murdered, Robert once again embraces his skills and sets out to find vengeance.

Denzel Washington (Robert), Pedro Pascal (Dave), Ashton Sanders (Miles), Orson Bean (Sam), Bill Pullman (Brian), Melissa Leo (Susan), Jonathan Scarfe (Resnik), Sakina Jaffrey (Fatima), Kazy Tauginas (Ari).

The Equalizer 2 begins by bringing us up to speed on Robert's life and his current moonlighting as a justice vigilante. We are also shown his softer side when he befriends a young man headed for trouble with hopes of steering him back on course. But when his life long friend Susan is brutally executed, Robert sheds his compassion in favor of vengeance. The remainder of the film is a journey of crime, action, and violence wrapping with a fairly mild Happy Ever After ending.

Acting was okay with Washington doing well with the action, less so with the emotion. Pascal was a decent antagonist and fit nicely. Sanders was okay and seemed to work well with Washington. Leo was solid and enjoyable, as were Pullman, Bean, and most of the remainder of the supporting cast.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are good with a solid, realistic feel. Action scenes were nicely done with good fit and realism. Dialogue nicely explained most of the storyline and kept things moving pretty well. Sound and soundtrack are mild but solid.

While The Equalizer 2 is a decent crime action flick, it does not add much to this franchise. The storyline lacks originality, instead leaning on Washington and action to keep things interesting. Unfortunately, it ends up looking like just about every other trained killer out for vengeance film. Die hard genre or Washington fans may enjoy this one.

With plenty of violence, gore, and some foul language, save this one for the oldest teens and above.
