Newly partnered undercover cops Starsky and Hutch run around in a red and white Ford Gran Torino busting criminals with help from a Huggy Bear, a police snitch.
Ben Stiller (Starsky), Owen Wilson (Hutch), Snoop Dogg (Huggy Bear), Fred Williamson (Captain Doby), Vince Vaughn (Feldman), Juliette Lewis (Kitty), Jason Bateman (Kevin), Amy Smart (Holly), Carmen Electra (Staci).
Starsky & Hutch begins with a bit of story setup and character introductions as we meet the two main characters. The main plot setup begins about ten minutes in and from there the film is your basic cops and robbers flick with a 70's theme. Sadly, the film feels more like a bad parody of the original series than a compliment. The added humor fell flat throughout the film and added almost nothing. The result is a film that plods along through a mundane plot with little energy.
Acting was decent with Stiller and Wilson working well together and delivering pretty well as usual. Snoop was fun and fit his role perfectly. Vaughn was a decent antagonist with Lewis, Bateman, Smart and the remainder of the supporting cast filling things out nicely.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were entertaining with some nice nods to 70's filming techniques and sets. Dialogue was campy and lacking depth. Sound and soundtrack are surprisingly good with some nice pop hits that fit well. Action scenes were mild but decent.
Sadly, Starsky & Hutch was a disappointment for us. The 70's series nod aside, the film had little to maintain audience interest with a lack of action and humor that repeatedly misses the mark. Those who could care less about the original series will likely enjoy this the most.
With a bit of mild sexuality, violence, and foul language, this should be fine for teens and above.
