Ex-cop and now ex-con, Spenser, makes an unusual alliance with Hawk, an aspiring fighter, to explore the strange deaths of two Boston police officers.
Mark Wahlberg (Spenser), Winston Duke (Hawk), Alan Arkin (Henry), Iliza Shlesinger (Cissy), Michael Gaston (Capt. Boylan), Bokeem Woodbine (Driscoll), Marc Maron (Cosgrove), James DuMont (Bentwood).
Spenser Confidential begins with a bit of backstory around Spenser's jail time as he is released from prison. Moving in with his friend Henry, he meets his new roommate Hawk, an aspiring fighter. As Spenser begins training with Hawk the two develop a friendship so naturally when the Boston PD begins harassing Spenser over the death of a cop, the two team up to investigate. The rest of the film is an interesting crime action drama with a fun Happy Ever After ending.
Wahlberg delivered nicely in a role that seems to suit him well. Duke was an interesting choice, made a good straight-man for the comedy, and added a bit of depth. Shlesinger was a nice fit against Wahlberg and also brought another dimension to the story. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid and enjoyable.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds all felt solid and realistic. Action scenes were mild but fitting for the story. Dialogue was decent with some bits of comedy thrown in from time to time, though I'd hesitate to call this a comedy. Sound and soundtrack are good.
Spenser Confidential doesn't add much to the crime action genre with a fairly well worn plot and mild presentation. At the same time, it is a fairly solid and enjoyable crime action flick so those who enjoy the genre should enjoy this one as well.
With some sexuality, a fair amount of violence and gore, and plenty of foul language, this should be fine for older teens and above.
