In an accident as a child, Pete ends up alone in the woods where he encounters Elliot, a dragon. The two become best friends and live happily until their home is threatened by a group of loggers.
Oakes Fegley (Pete), Bryce Howard (Grace), Robert Redford (Meacham), Oona Laurence (Natalie), Wes Bentley (Jack), Karl Urban (Gavin), Isiah Whitlock Jr. (Sheriff).
After being orphaned in the woods due to an automobile accident, Pete meets Elliot, a dragon, and the two become best friends living together in the woods. But when a logging crew invades their forest and find Pete, they take him back to the city launching a series of dramatic events as Pete and Elliot struggle to regain their life together.
While this is a film for children, it has enough adult concepts and drama to keep the film watchable by their parents. The story is fun and surprisingly realistic considering it is about a fictional creature.
Acting was good with Fegley doing a very good job. Howard was solid and worked well with Redford, who was a joy as always. Bentley was okay, while Urban fit his role nicely. The remainder of the cast was solid.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds which were heavily dependent upon CGI, were nicely done with a solid big budget feel. Action scenes were good and only slightly overdone. Dialogue was simple but good. Sound and soundtrack were solid. I particularly enjoyed finding Lindsey Stirling contributing to the soundtrack.
Overall Pete's Dragon is a decent children's film that would work well for family movie night. Don't be surprised if there are a few tears as the Happy Ever After ending is rolled out.
Nothing here to limit audience age.
