Spawned from the comedy-rock band with the same name, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny follows JB as he heads to California to become a rock star. Along the way he meets KG and together the two create Tenacious D and set out to find The Pick of Destiny.
Jack Black (JB), Kyle Gass (KG), JR Reed (Lee), Ronnie James Dio, Tim Robbins (Stranger), Dave Grohl (Satan), Ben Stiller (Guitar Center Guy), Paul Tompkins (Open Mic Host), Troy Gentile (Lil' JB), Amy Poehler (Waitress).
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny begins with some musical backstory leading to character introductions and the main plot. Once JB and KG team up they focus on finding The Pick of Destiny, a guitar pick cursed by Satan they believe will make them rock gods. The rest of the film is a ridiculous ride of humor and slapstick comedy punctuated with musical interludes.
Acting was a little rough but funny and fit the film well. Black delivered his usual in role that fit him perfectly. Gass was enjoyable and worked well with Black. Robbins was amusing as always, and Grohl did a nice job. Cameo appearances by Stiller, Dio, and others were enjoyable and the supporting cast did well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were varied and fit the film. Animation was fun, as was mild CGI. Dialogue was appropriately campy and frequently hilarious. Sound and soundtrack were fun with lots of musical snippets that added to the humor.
If you enjoy a good raunchy comedy with rock music roots, give this one a shot. It may not be for everyone, particularly the pointless foul language, but aside from that the film is pretty darn funny.
With plenty of foul language, some mild violence, alcohol, drugs, and mildly sensitive material, this should be fine for teens and above.
