Fifty years ago when a local elementary school buried a time capsule one of the students, Lucinda, added a sheet of paper filled with numbers when the other children added pictures of robots and rockets. When the capsule is opened and Caleb gets Lucinda’s paper his father, John, sees it and believes it may hold predictions of the future.
Nicolas Cage (John Koestler), Chandler Canterbury (Caleb Koestler), Rose Byrne (Diana), Lara Robinson (Abby/Lucinda), DG Maloney (The Stranger), Nadia Townsend (Grace).
This movie starts off with some brief context and character development then jumps into the action and drama pretty hard. There are some slow moments during plot movement but the action scenes and thrill of the plot as it shifts and changes keep it pretty darn interesting. Interestingly enough after reading some reviews of this movie it is apparent there are a lot of people who just don’t get it at all. The message is somewhat subtle and if you don’t pick up on the biblical and mythological references and put them together with the ending you will never understand the depth of the film.
Acting was okay by Cage as usual but it was really Canterbury, Robinson, and Byrne that put forth the performances in this film. Not until the movie was over did I realize Robinson had played two roles in the film.
Special effects were very well done for the most part considering the enormity of what they tried to portray. Some were a bit overdone but they almost had to be for the film to have the necessary shock effect. Camera work, sound, dialogue, sets and background were all nicely done indicating a well budgeted film.
Overall I enjoyed this movie enough to immediately watch it again a second time with a friend just so I would have someone to talk to about it.
Some foul language, and disturbing images for younger viewers so save this for preens and above.
