Movie review: Species IV: The Awakening

When Miranda starts changing, Tom her scientist uncle, takes her to Mexico where they join the other scientist who helped create her, Forbes, and attempt to reverse the effects of alien DNA used in her creation. In the meantime, Miranda struggles to remain somewhat human and not kill or mate with everyone, alien and human, in sight.

Ben Cross (Tom), Marlene Favela (Azura), Helena Mattsson (Miranda Hollander), Dominic Keating (Forbes).

I haven’t really followed the franchise so I don’t know if this is a good continuation or not but the plot wasn’t half bad. There could have been a bit better background or explanation for some things but it did pretty well. And where it didn’t do well, there was always a healthy dose of nudity or creature effects as distraction.

Acting wasn’t bad, it was just plain boring, with the exception of Keating who I thought did a great job. Mattsson was good in parts but just not consistently good throughout the film.

Creature effects and camera work are what make this one decent. I particularly enjoyed the creature spitting spikes during a creature fight. Sadly, the ending of this movie was ridiculously lame considering the events preceding. It was anti-climactic to say the least.

I still enjoy the creature effects of this franchise and camera work was well done. Dialogue and sound are okay as were sets with the exception of a few plot holes.

With lovely full nudity, implied sexual scenes, blood, guts, violence and language oh my. . .save this one for the adult crowd and the oldest of teens.
