Movie review: The Autopsy of Jane Doe

When a nameless homicide victim's body is brought to a father-and-son coroner team they quickly find this corpse has some strange secrets. As they proceed with the autopsy of the woman, things only get stranger, and more dangerous.

Brian Cox (Tommy), Emile Hirsch (Austin), Ophelia Lovibond (Emma), Michael McElhatton (Sheriff Burke), Olwen Kelly (Jane Doe), Jane Perry (Lt. Wade), Parker Sawyers (Trooper Cole), Sydney (Stanley the Cat).

The Autopsy of Jane Doe begins with a bit of character introduction and background but quickly moves to the main plot as Jane Doe is brought to the father-and-son coroner team of Tommy and Austin. While external examination of Jane reveals some interesting things, her autopsy uncovers trauma somehow impossibly delivered inside her body while still alive. The remainder of the film follows along as Tommy and Austin struggle to explain how Jane died even as they begin to experience her same trauma.

Acting was solid and enjoyable in this one. Cox delivered well in a role that is becoming familiar to him in recent years. Hirsch was solid as well though his emotional responses seemed a bit tepid at times. Kelly was good, though she was dead and didn't have much dialogue. The remainder of the supporting cast appeared only briefly but were good.

Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good. Despite much of the film being in dim lighting, it was well done and we had no problems. The autopsy and gore were well done. Dialogue is solid and moves things along. Sound and soundtrack fit nicely.

When the last stitch is made The Autopsy of Jane Doe ends up being a solid horror thriller. Though much is left unexplained, the film holds attention fairly well with solid horror and thriller aspects. Those who are squeamish will probably hate this one due to autopsy detail. Horror fans will be just fine.

There is no sexuality but there is a lot of medical nudity. The autopsy, and some other scenes, are graphic and bloody. A few uses of profanity are thrown in for giggles. In other words, save this one for adults.
