Failing Private Investigator Harry is hired by Louis to find a club singer named Johnny Favourite who has failed to repay a debt. The problem is that every time Harry gets a lead the person is found murdered in a strange, ritualistic manner.
Mickey Rourke (Harry), Robert De Niro (Louis), Lisa Bonet (Epiphany), Charlotte Rampling (Margaret), Michael Higgins (Fowler), Stocker Fontelieu (Ethan), Brownie McGhee (Toots), Elizabeth Whitcraft (Connie).
Angel Heart begins well enough and we quickly find voodoo, southern hospitality, private eyes, and Lisa Bonet showing it all off. Following the launch, the film then falls into a coma for about 45 minutes before slapping you upside the head with a nice little twist at the end. The story is decent, but the acting is what really brings it all together.
Mickey Rourke was actually likeable in this one and did well. I loved De Niro in his role which he managed perfectly! Lisa was disappointing as an actress once more, but added some nice scenery. Rampling was solid in her brief role. The remainder of the supporting cast was interesting if nothing else.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are decent but this one is showing some age. Action scenes were well done. Dialogue was okay, as was sound and soundtrack.
Overall, a pretty good movie. Maybe not a re-watch for me, but good! Those who enjoy a solid mystery or thriller should enjoy this one. Fans of the lead cast will probably enjoy it as well.
With some intense nudity, violence, gore, disturbing images, and foul language, save this one for older teens and above.
