The Lycan's have a ruthless new leader, Marius, whom is focused on elimination of the Vampire species once he has their power. Currently dealing with the psychotic ambitions of a rival female vampire, Selene and her trainee David must now confront Marius on a second front.
Kate Beckinsale (Selene), Theo James (David), Tobias Menzies (Marius), Lara Pulver (Semira), Charles Dance (Thomas), James Faulkner (Cassius), Bradley James (Varga), Daisy Head (Alexia), Peter Andersson (Vidar).
Underworld: Blood Wars begins with a few minutes of flashbacks in the hope of tying this film to the one previous, which it does. It also shows us that this franchise truly is a never ending Vampire vs. Lycan war that will never end. Given that storyline, the film develops decent depth with a consistent theme of an action scene followed by a drama scene, rinse and repeat. What doesn't develop are the characters who, despite their age, seem to have little emotion and less depth.
Acting was almost as dry as the characters being represented. Beckinsale was solemn and brooding as usual. James was mildly entertaining, as was Pulver. Menzies looked menacing but that was the extent of things. The remainder of the supporting cast was lukewarm at best.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds felt consistent with the franchise and decently done. Action scenes and CGI were enjoyable and intense. Dialogue was okay though a good dose of emotion would help. Sound and soundtrack are solid.
While Underworld: Blood Wars is a decent supernatural Vampire vs. Lycan flick, the film brings little to the genre or even the franchise. Those looking for depth and emotion in their viewing choices may be disappointed with this one.
With some mild sexuality, a lot of violence, a bit of foul language, and potentially disturbing images, this should be fine for teens and above.
