John has retired as a psychic but when a serial killer with apparent psychic powers of his own raises the body count a friend with the FBI, Joe, asks for his help once again.
Anthony Hopkins (John), Jeffrey Morgan (Joe), Abbie Cornish (Katherine), Colin Farrell (Charles), Matt Gerald (Sloman), Jose Cantillo (Sawyer), Marley Shelton (Laura), Xander Berkeley (Mr. Ellis), Kenny Johnson (David).
Solace begins with some character introductions and setup for both the main plot and a couple of parallel storylines. Once John and Joe are reconnected the depth builds as the story evolves and the serial killer becomes more brazen. The film winds down about as expected. What it doesn't do is bring much of anything new to the genre with a less than original storyline and lack of energy.
Acting was decent with Hopkins delivering as usual, but with much less energy. Morgan was solid but also felt a bit subdued. Farrell played a good antagonist and seemed to work with Hopkins fairly well. Cornish, Cantillo, Shelton, Johnson and the remainder of the supporting cast were enjoyable yet also felt low energy.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were well done with good detail and fit for the film. Action scenes were pretty good without taking over. Dialogue had decent depth and kept things moving. Sound and soundtrack are well done.
Overall Solace is a solid crime mystery with decent technical work and acting. At the same time, it feels like a film we have seen many times before; psychic helps cops catch a killer. Combined with a lack of energy, we end up with a fairly mild mannered flick. Drama fans will likely enjoy this one the most.
With some fairly explicit sexuality, violence, gore, foul language, and potentially disturbing images, save this one for the oldest teens and above.
